| 216650 | 2004-02-19 09:51:00 | Ruth Aitkin AND the Silver Ferns. An embarassing bunch of cry babies one year and then they actually fluke a couple of matches. Richard Tonks has coached the WORLDS top female double sculls crew of the past TWO Years and they get diddly squat! What a joke! rant off. |

| 216656 | 2004-02-19 22:55:00 | > Anyone know who the judges were? > > Seemed to me you had to belong to the Temperance > Society to be considered? :D Im pretty sure Brendon Telfer (aka Mr Netball) was one but dont know about the others. It would be interesting to know what criteria they use. They must balance how popular a sport is in NZ vs how popular the sport is world wide to gauge the level of achievement. To me it seems like deserving teams like the Black Sox who cant possibly achieve anything more than they have (unless they win cup after cup) and other minority sports will never win anything because ... a) The sports not big enough In NZ b) The sports not big enough world-wide They have a definite lean towards popularity in NZ and some say thats fair enough because its "our awards" not a world-wide award. Realistically there were only 3-4 teams in the netball that could possibly win and probably the same for softball but rowing is more open and therefore probably deserves the credit. On the Coutts debate he should never have been nominated because hes in a team sport, not an individual sport for a start. Thats my 2 cents. :-) |

| 216658 | 2004-02-20 00:06:00 | On the other hand you've got Coutts who has never lost an americas cup race. Thats quite an acomplishment. | PoWa (203) | ||
