| 216623 | 2004-02-19 08:26:00 | I am looking at buying a P3 Compaq Computer second hand off trademe for a 2nd computer for the kids to do schoolwork on. the specs are... Compaq Deskpro EN series Intel Celeron 600 mhz processor 10 gb harddrive 128 mb ram I would probably like to upgrade the memory to 256mb and maybe a bigger hard-drive. I was wondering if the compaq brand takes most standard brands/parts or are the desktops more agreeable with compaq components??? Thanks for any help... Mantis |

| 216626 | 2004-02-19 09:21:00 | Glassman raises a very important point. There have been heaps ie. literally hundreds of slimline Compaq Deskpro computers sold at Turners Auctions Lower Hutt, during the last few months, due to government departments and others upgrading. These have all had network cards, and only the odd one or two out of the lot have had CD drives. If you can get them, they cost about $200. Many of these Compaqs are being sold off on TradeMe by small time dealers working from home. The going bid price at Turners was round about $70-$90 for a PII 450 to about $150-$180 for a PIII 600, and most came with a 17" Compaq monitor. |

There is a riser card that has only 2 PCI slots, and they wont take any old RAM, you would have to look at the manual to get the RAM type that is compatible . They are also limited by only one IDE connector, I think, and there is no room for a slave hard drive . |

| 216629 | 2004-02-19 22:20:00 | The other thing is Compaq seem not to reply to any request seeking technical help these days. I have E-Mailed them at mailto:RcccTech@hp.com many times and have never ever received a reply of any sort. The correspondence has never come back as undeliverable either. I believe the're now tied up with HP so in view of their tardiness Ill give both manufactures a big miss. Anyone had better luck? :( |
