216672 2004-02-19 21:25:00 With the lightning storm we had last night, my pc was unplugged from power and phone and I was In bed.

Quite a show :)

216673 2004-02-19 21:33:00 Why unplug the PC? Is there a concern about shorting them out? Are the more susceptible than other electrical appliances??

Are you possibly being over-cautious ( not a bad thing! ), or do a lot of you folk out there do this during a thunderstorm?

Cheers
Tim

216674 2004-02-19 21:38:00 Unplugging any electrical equipment (including telephones) is actually a good idea during electrical storms, Tim. Electronic equipment is more expensive than most other electrical equipment. :D

Of course it's a bit like taking a coat because it "might" rain. What happens when you don't take the coat.? :D

216675 2004-02-19 22:12:00 Agreed, but let's keep it real.

It's not practical to walk around the house and unplug 30 electronic items when there's a bit of lightning in the sky.

My point is, are computers "special"? Do they have a greater penchant for damage during electrical storms?

216676 2004-02-19 23:06:00 Unlike a jug or a toaster, when a computer is powered down the power supply repains "connected" and vulnerable to spikes on the supply from such events as lightning.

This is the same as microwave ovens, TVs and videos to name a few.

The difference with computers can arise when they are connected to the phone as well. That multiplies the chance of damage as there can be severe voltage gradients developed between the phone line and the power line in an electrical storm (or when a car hits a pole and causes power disruption).

216677 2004-02-19 23:07:00 Yes Tim,

See what happens is Mothe Nature has had a bad hair day. She sends thunder and lightning.

Because of peoples ignorance toward her abilities, she see's theyve been working on their PC all day and FRIES IT!!

Either that, or you get what happened to me:
Nothing

One of my PC's still has a 46 day uptime.

This may be ignorance on my behalf, but Im not going to let a little bad weather send me to the attic to get some Candles and a Gas-BBQ (Although it is a good excuse to have a BBQ ;-)).
I dont have anything Mission-Critical that cannot be restored from backups.

Perhaps tonight Mother Nature will show me who's boss and make me regret this post :p

Chill.

216679 2004-02-19 23:46:00 I have a friend who owns a computer repair shop. After every lightning storm you can put money on the fact that there will be at least one machine in with power surge damage.

I wouldnt run around the house and unplug everything but if it was a sever storm and the lights were being affected then I would unplug TV/Vid/PC/Stero. Having said that, they are covered by insurance... hmmmmmmmmm

216680 2004-02-19 23:51:00 Interesting couple of posts....

I noticed last night the lights did flicker....

I've made a executive decision based on this info., next electrical storm the PC gets unplugged, tho by the time I get thru all the wiring it probably would have finished.

Wasn't it cool though! Pity we don't get more...

Now I better go an explain to the missus why I've made a decision without consulting her first.....seems it was much easier in the caveman days.
