| 216699 | 2004-02-19 14:39:00 | We have just installed a Sonic firewall Tele3 TZX on a server running Windows 2003 server, also we set up VPN so that the our client can access his XLS and DOC files. However when he connects to his server with Sonics VPN from his remote area and trys to open a DOC or XLS file it takes 30-40 secs which is too slow, we did cut the time to 10-15 seconds by advising him to open the Word/Excel programme first and then opening the document on the mapped drive, however this defeats the purpose of VPN. He does have Full Broadband Jetstream. Sonic reckons it's to do with Microsoft software that needs configuring, I have gone to Microsoft web site but I didn't find anything useful or that I could understand. Does anybody have any other ideas or links I can go to to speed this VPN connection up????. Cheers |

What is he using on his client PC, a software VPN client or another VPN appliance? Is the VPN configured to pass broadcast traffic across? What sort of node type is his workstation configured to use? Is DNS configured properly? Do you use WINS? What version of Windows does the Client use? |

| 216706 | 2004-02-22 11:08:00 | a software VPN Client on the user side. I can't remember the pass broadcast traffic issue, I would think no. no answer for the node. we use external DNS which is the ISP's DNS no wins windows XP home or pro on the clients end. Hope this help. |

| 216707 | 2006-11-20 20:21:00 | I'm thinking since you have broadband, you're probably talking about 1 to 2Mbps. Broadband is not full 100 Mbps network speed. Nowadays you even have GB and higher local networks. Most data programs were designed to operate efficiently on 100 Mbps networks, not 1 or 2 Mbps networks. If you are opening files across a 1 to 3 MBps network, then you are essentially shoving a basketball through a garden hose. VPN is only good if both sides have at least a T3. This can be quite expensive (several thousand per month). You might be better off to use some kind of remote desktop solution. | infoKingFool (5288) | ||
