217327 2004-02-22 02:04:00 I'm shopping for a sound card to replace onboard sound . My PC is plugged into a stereo amp using a cable with 3 . 5mm headphone socket plug on one end and two RCA plugs on the other . The aim is to improve sound quality for mp3 and movies, I'm not a games fan (yet) .

Ideally I'd like a sound card with RCA plugs on it so I can use a decent cable between the PC and amp . But I can't find such a card so I am left with the M-Audio revolution 7 . 1 or the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 .

The revolution is $100 more expensive . Has anyone used either of these cards or similar, or have any recommendations?

217328 2004-02-22 02:37:00 unless you rip the mp3s yourself at a very high bit rate then you wont notice much improvement inb sound quality for mp3s kiwibeat (304)
217329 2004-02-22 04:47:00 Is your current sound card 2 . 1, 3 . 1, 4 . 1, 5 . 1 etc or are you just using stereo speakers .

All you can do is rip the tracks at a higer bit rate, as previuosly stated you won't notice much of a difference . You may want to think of investing in a 5 . 1 or greater speaker setup on a decent 5 . 1 or better sound board . All audio equipment such as speakers and sound cards have their threshholds the higher the threshold the better the music experience .

You'll be surprised how much differently a song sounds in 5 . 1 surround sound with EAX 1/2, this is of course bearing in mind that CD audio will only be played in stereo as they do not come in 5 . 1 standard off the disc . . unless you encode it into an mp3 etc .

My suggestioin is get yourself a good 5 . 1 capable audio card, and a decent set of 5 . 1 surround sound speakers . You be surprised how different things will sound .

217330 2004-02-22 07:27:00 Thanks dudes, I'm using CDex to rip at 320, but I notice a fair bit of background hiss at higher volumes. I'm a stereo fan, so unlikely I will move to 5.1, I'm just looking for a better stereo sound quality. Operations (5295)
217331 2004-02-22 08:08:00 Yeah fair enough... if that's the case then I would suggest you invest in a stereo amplifier and speakers with a higher frequency response than the ones you have now. This does not necessarily mean you need a more powerful amplifier but one which has a broader range of audio frequencies... the same goes for the speakers... bigger isn't always better.
