217267 2004-02-22 00:01:00 Hi there guys and gals!

I was at a clients house yesterday fixing several problems on her computer. One problem, however, has got me scratching my head. ?:|Every time we shut down the computer, it will shut down but then reboot itself. The only way to shut it down is by pressing the power button.

Apparently she had an "expert" around at her house looking at her computer a few days back, they don't know what he did to the computer but it's been playing up ever since he left.

Any ideas as to what is causing the computer to keep on rebooting at system shut down? The operating system is Win98. The guy installed "PC-cillin" and I removed it, thinking that that was the cause, but I was wrong. :8}

Thanx in advance for all your help!

Brian :-)

Have you checked that power management is still enabled in BIOS?

Also if older vintage PC check it is set that the power button shuts the PC down .

Also check that power management is controled by OS .

It all most sounds like the expert reset the BIOS settings, perhapes while removing a virus??

217269 2004-02-22 00:30:00 Windows 98 will "remember" the setting in the shut down dialogue window thus if the option is not changed from "Restart" to "Shut down" it will restart each time until the option is changed to another setting. Check that this is not occuring. Apologies if this is too basic but sometimes we overlook the most simple solutions. tommy (2826)
217270 2004-02-22 02:33:00 Theres an option in their somewhere to do with fast shut down, eithier one of teh tabs under msconfig or maybe under the device manager.

Anyway, altering it can cause exactly what you have happening.

Look and ye shall find.

217272 2004-02-22 20:10:00 Sounds like the poor lady has another "expert" trying to fix her computer.
I sure hope you're not going to charge her for your "expertise". ;)

217273 2004-03-06 23:01:00 Hi Albatross!

I don't pretend to be an expert, and I even tell those ones who I do work for that I'm not an expert. I tell them straight that if I don't know what the problem is, then I tell those I do work for that I don't know. I even tell them that if I can't fix the problem then they don't pay (what's the point of paying if the problem is still there? It's a waste of money, and I'm not out to rip people off. (I don't have an hourly fee, it's based on how complicated the problem is)..I'm just a guy who likes playing with computers...and I've learnt a few things (not everything) over the past 10 years...)

Take care!
Brian
