217279 2004-02-21 22:37:00 I have had a quick look through old postings, as I think I have read the answer, but can't find the bit I wanted. Thought it would be quicker just to post this again for a quick response.

I have set up 2 Dell Computers (ex The Warehouse deal) in a home network with one internet connection.
They are running Windows XP Home, Norton AntiVirus, Office XP

They are constantly trying to access an outside line and dial up the internet and can't find the programme that is being persistent - have taken out the password so as to "stop it in its tracks" but would prefer to identify the problem.

I have tried the following.
1/ Turned off automatic Windows Updates - neither computer wants these now!

2/ I have run Ad-Aware and can't find anything suspicious there - they are both only a week old so haven't been surfing much.

3/ I wonder if it was Nortons Live Update but can't find any settings that would be causing this. Both machines are fully up to date with virus signatures.

4/ There is nothing in the StartUp menu in Start--> All Programs

I am used to using Windows XP Pro and wonder if its something to do with the Home Edition it came loaded with.

Thanks in advance for your help, it has me stumped

217281 2004-02-21 23:20:00 I have connected them with a cable - then one computer is a host and one a client. The host is connected to the internet through a modem and the client dials up through the host (if its not altready connected)

if useing ICS try turning off the autodail option
Can you tell me how to do this?

217282 2004-02-22 00:06:00 Install a third party firewall and it will indicate which program is trying to dial out. Kerio has a free version that will work with ICS. tommy (2826)
217283 2004-02-22 00:21:00 Thanks I will try Kerio if I get no other suggestions - I am thinking it must be something to do with Window XP default settings as it hasn't had much installed yet. Gill (1530)
217284 2004-02-22 01:01:00 Well I can't offer much here except to say I have the same thing. I have Win98se and use mostly Opera but still have IE as well. Happens sporadically and I have done the same as you and with spybot as well. I run zonealarm and that doesn't stop it so I have done the same "stop it in it's tracks" as you, by unchecking the "Connect automatically".

It doesn't show in Task Manager, and it isn't Win update.

Be interested to see what ppl suggest. It's not a big issue, in fact it's very small one, certainly compared to something like CoolWebSearch. Caused me a day's grief until Phoenix pulled me out.

217285 2004-02-22 01:24:00 You can get a list of things that startup that you may or may not want at Pacs-Portal. Maybe you already know about this butyou can have a look here. (www.sysinfo.org) HTH :D mark c (247)
217286 2004-02-22 01:34:00 Go here net-intergration (www.net-integration.net) read about and get "hijack this". Unzip it to it's own folder then run it. Scan and save a log for posting here. The log can be opened with notepad and the content's posted (copy and paste please) in your new post.
******Do not fix anything******
I'll take a look and check for dialer's, auoto updater's ect. "Hijack this" will show what's running on your computer.
