217179 2004-02-21 10:38:00 Hands up if anyone wants a pressf1 hub

*hamstar raises hand

Sheez, I'm probably gonna get flamed for this one but....

What if its just a plain chat hub, no shares (eg. min share 10000GB etc)

It would be the kick@ss helphub, people wouldn't be there unless they were chatting cos theres nothing to download there (which would also stop bad reflections on PCW or PressF1 or IDG ;-))

I think it'd be cool. Who else uses Direct Connect here? Cos I went to chatf1 and it was a graveyard man.

...I mean think of it, instant answers...

217180 2004-02-21 11:07:00 There's already a hub or two run by PF1'ers.

Why not just use ChatF1?

If people really wanted to be available for instant help 24 / 7, they'd sign into Chatf1!

As for shares, I have an 80GB HDD, but have managed to share well over 160GB in some hubs. That "min share" is useless with the right know-how!

I dont mean to be a kill-joy, but why not just use Chatf1?

Chill.

217181 2004-02-21 11:30:00 I'll have to visit chatf1 when its day...

I buggered up the min share thing didn't I? That would stp anyone getting in unless they had 10000GB.

You don't have the addy's for those hubs do you?

217182 2004-02-21 11:34:00 No, no....
The Min Share thing is fine, but its useless on ANY hub with the right knowledge, your can have a massive share list.... Right Cyberchuck?

Im sorry, but I dont have any addy's, havent been to any hubs in a while :-)

Dont mean to dampen your spirits, but yeah....

217183 2004-02-21 12:13:00 But realistically how many people can have the time to just sit there waiting to answer something for someone?

Then if you log in after someones asked a question you never see it...

I should probably stop now.

217184 2004-02-21 13:17:00 There may be some sort of limit on the maximum size of your share list on a DC hub, but it would all boil down to various factors.

Cheating to raise the size of your share list is quite easy on Linux, so I understand; and while you can do the same thing in Windows using one of two methods that are inbuilt into Windows (try "subst /?" in the command line, or else investigate mounting partitions in empty folders, which is only supported by NTFS), I personally ran into a limit of ~17GB using .PhantomDC++.

Enough said, I had set up enough virtual drives and mounts to go over a 200GB share list, but PDC (or something about the same content being shared over and over, or another obscure reason) caused it to be limited to 17-odd GB.

You could probably ban people with a share list over 0B (it would defeat the purpose of running a DC hub, but it could be a useful feature for some people), as an alternative.

However, enough of this rambling. Like it was pointed out, in a DC hub you do not see messages that were sent before you login; in ChatF1 you can to a certain extent. Admittedly, it seems like ChatF1 has passed it's hey-day, but people do still use it (most notably when PressF1 goes down), though admittedly it seems ChatF1's use has dropped even in those time periods.

Thats what I meant.

> you do not see messages that were sent before you login

Well so what... that happens in chat anyway....

And what, you going to send a message before you login ?:|
