217078 2004-02-20 23:26:00 Appreciate advice. For the second time in less than a week Outlook 2003 is a hung application when I try to start. Last week after running Office detect and repair etc. Microsoft Support walked me through setting up a new Outlook profile and then importing the Outlook.pst data into new set up, because they could not fix it following the usual processes (or should I say they could not provide a solution). However the problem has occurred again - nothing unusual by way of start up, email traffic etc. When I try to start Outlook I see a hyphen before - Microsoft Oulook and then it hangs. I cannot open it in safe mode, I have run Inbox Repair Tool - no errors found, yet still unable to open. I could try to set up again and import the pst file again (I'm not sure of the steps on how to do this) however it seems to me there must be something causing this. I run Windows XP/Office 2003/Nortons A-V runs in the background all the time, Lava Adaware. I have downloaded off MS Knowledge Base info but it all relates to Inbox Repair Tool. Appreciate any feedback. espv (5292)

Fix/repair options don't always clear out the root cause of software problems and you may have to uninstall Outlook, install a clean new version then re-import your PST file. Unfortunately I don't know if you can selectively uninstall Outlook, but I can't see why not. I recall seeing some sort of option on the install CD but i'm not game to play with my install right now. Alternatively you could uninstall the whole Office suite and start again.

217080 2004-02-21 02:24:00 It sounds like you might have something wrong with your PST file. If Outlook was running fine after you created a new profile, but now does work after importing from your old PST, it could be something in there that's causing the problem.

How big is your PST file (the actual file size, as reported in Windows Explorer)?

I know that if I let my PST get out of hand in the way of size, it can cause startup problems with outlook. If your PST is bigger than the total available memory (physical and virtual) then this problem could occur. If you create a new profile, try importing only absolutely necessary info, and use the old one as a back-up or archive of your old data.
