2004-02-20 23:08:00 | Hi guys well I've finally managed to install Fedora, and I must say it looks really smooth, I just have to get used to the KDE interface now. I have one problem though... when I boot up into Fedora I get a dialog box which says the following "Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver: can't start sound i/o. The sound server will continue, using the null output device" With my recent installations of Red Hat 8/9 I couldn't get my mp3's to play, but I never had this message appear at all. Now I was thinking... I have an onboard audio chip ( Sound Max 5.1) but it's disabled and I use my Sound Blaster Live 5.1 card instead... could this be the problem with the sound system or is there something else. Also can I install the Open Office package (1.5 I think it is) from the PC World CD over the default Open Office installation which comes with Fedora or do I have to uninstall it first? cheers chiefnz

Run redhat-config-soundcard and test the soundcard detection. To see whether it is an issue with the KDE sounds look under Control Centre > Sound & Multimedia > Sound System and try the test. Also post back here with the output of: cat /proc/pci cat /etc/modules.conf cat /proc/modules ls -L -l /dev/dsp* These details will help troubleshoot the problem area. > With my recent installations of Red Hat 8/9 I > couldn't get my mp3's to play, but I never had this > message appear at all. When you get your sound sorted out, download and install the xmms-mp3 plugin for Fedora from here xmms-mp3-1.2.8-3.p.i386.rpm (www.gurulabs.com) > Also can I install the Open Office package (1.5 I > think it is) from the PC World CD over the default > Open Office installation which comes with Fedora or > do I have to uninstall it first? OpenOffice is only up to stable version 1.1.0 and Fedora already has 1.1.0. However when updating OpenOffice you can either install side-by-side the two versions or uninstall the old version first. |

2004-02-21 04:26:00 | IIRC in Fedora you can edit /etc/modules.conf and un-comment out the line related to emu10k1 That should fix the problem :-) BTW - KDE isnt "smooth" til you're using Keramik ;-) Chill.

2004-02-21 04:29:00 | Ok I have sound when I play audio CD's. When I try the sound test I get the same error message which I posted in my original message above. | 217034 | 2004-02-21 04:41:00 | Ok Chill I've tried what you've suggested and nothing worked, in fact it now says that Kmix is ill formatted. When I bring up the mixer applet it says select mixer but there's nothing in the drop-down list to choose. I think I broke it mate :( cheers chiefnz

2004-02-21 06:05:00 | Try this: Open an xterm / konsole / gnome-terminal, whatever. su - [enter root pwd] sndconfig Follow through the prompts, it should pick it up no problems. Chill.

2004-02-21 07:08:00 | Well Chill I tried your advice and nothing worked. Autodetect picked up the SB Live but when playing the test sound I heard nothing. I tried manual configuration and the same thing happened Any ideas cheers chiefnz

2004-02-21 11:14:00 | And kmix doesnt pick up the card? Try this: cat /dev/urandom >> /dev/dsp Hit Ctrl + C to stop it. Does anything come out? It had already detected your SB!Live card because the modules emu10k1 were loaded. Im thinking Volume problem? Chill.

2004-02-21 23:01:00 | Ok Chill I tried . . . . . cat /dev/urandom >> /dev/dsp All it said was . . . . . "cat: write error: No such device" Any ideas as to what's going on . Is anyone running Linux with a disabled onboard audio chip and a PCI sound card, like a SB Live or Audigy 1/2 . I still think that may be the problem . Do you think it's worth removing the SB Live and booting Linux like that, or is it not worth the effort . cheers chiefnz
