216939 2004-02-20 19:14:00 Hi all,
Need some help with the scan disk function on my computer.I can perform the 'standard scan' with no problem, but when i want to do a 'thorough scan',after about five minutes or so,i get a pop up saying that windows or another program is trying to access(words to that effect),and scan disk has restarted 10 times, and to close all other prgrames. What's happening???I am doing the scan in 'safe mode',and have windows Me..Also is there anyway to speed up the 'scan' when i get it sorted out??

216940 2004-02-20 21:53:00 try setting a decent minimum swapfile size. that helps stop swap file from changing size while you are scandisking or defraging. or even disable the swapfile all together. just remember to turn it back on before rebooting pc. tweak'e (174)

Otherwise, run it in safe mode.

216943 2004-02-21 09:55:00 Hi Roger

What's your OS?

216944 2004-02-21 10:13:00 If you had read Rogers query, you will see he says he has Win ME.

Apart from that, we have discussed this problem before many times. It is a very common problem. Some others & myself recommend using "Enditall".

It's a free program that will close all running applications before you run scandisk & defrag. Try a search here on PF1 for "enditall" Works for me.

216945 2004-02-21 10:24:00 not sure if enditall typr programs will do a lot seeing as hes running it in safe mode.

for swap file adjustment look under control panel/system/performance/virtual memory then specify settings, don't change max setting just make min setting 100 or 200 meg for starters.

do you have any other problems with the pc or are you running scandisk just for maintainence??

216946 2004-02-21 10:37:00 Well hit me with a hand bag baz.

tweak'e, if you set a min you have to set a max as youve taken control of it from windows. A good all round (very good for games) is a min of 250 and a max of at least 1000. Just make sure you have some space left on your harddrive when setting max.

Pheonix has the right idea
" Also pays to disable both screensaver and anti-virus software before scandisk, as it can cause this too.

not quite. if you leave the max setting alone (you will note the amount is already filled in) windows will control the max setting (basicly it can use whatever space is left on the drive if required).
note in system.ini under 386enh there will be no maxpagingfilesize listed only a minpagingfilesize.

216948 2004-02-21 11:43:00 Well Tweak'e, does Roger have to use Safe mode. No not if he uses "Enditall" I find it really good. Tweak'e, have you ever used it ? Bazza (407)
