In any case when you said an 800GB file can be compressed to "nothing", how big would the "nothing" be? I personally don't see how its possible to get the required compression in order to d/l a compressed file that was originally 800GB using a 56K modem in 5 mins; even if using the most efficient/effective compression algorithms. <shrugs> ... maybe its possible, though I don't see how. - aNtzy |

| 217207 | 2004-02-22 07:44:00 | It depends what sort of file you are downloading. If it's a easily compressed file and you have a good modem it'll download at a faster speed. Even though the theoretical maximum for 56k modem is 7 kilobytes per second. However say you are downloading a txt document or something else which is easily compressed it'll say 21 kbps or something becasue it is compressing it by 3 times. | Chao is back (634) | ||
| 217208 | 2004-02-22 07:47:00 | If an 800 GB file was all binary "1"'s as an example, it would compress to a file with the file name, the value ('1") and the number of times that was sequentially repeated (8,192,000) plus start and stop bits and error checking overhead. Probably a couple of kB all up. But those files rarely exist.... Take Terry's point, his file was a zip file and they are already fully compressed. Personally, I think its to do with UFO activity ... |

I sent a 6mb text file filled with all 1's. It transferred in 10secs to a person on 56k (over msn). So I guess it could work if both parties had 800Gb drives :p |

Have you heard of RAID arrays???? Try them and you would be surprised at how big you can make them. As to how to make a file that big it is quite simple to program up using Visual Basic 6. Where did I do it? Here at home between me and a mate.. |

| 217214 | 2004-02-23 03:19:00 | I intend to say no more on this. I have made my point which is that a 56K modem can go faster due to compression. It works well on pure text files but no so hot on files already compressed. This is the sole reason for seeing nice burst of speed. Over to you gracie but there will be no more replies on this issue from me. |

| 217215 | 2004-02-23 05:05:00 | Well............... From time to time my chidlren *affectionately* refer to me a a bear of very little brain, so bear with me here BJ. (Pun intended). Big file = lotsa bits 'n bytes Compressed file = not so many bits 'n bytes Heavily compressed uni-character file = almost no bit 'n bytes (by comparison). That's why we compress files, to make them smaller. Surely the speed of download is directly related to the final compressed size and has very little (if anything) to do with the original humungous file size. Therefore as WTF has pointed out in his uniquely acerbic way, ably supported by Godfather's usual sound logic: If you think you downloaded an 800GB file in 5 minutes or even a 1GB file in five minutes, t'wasn't so. Modems don't care if the file is compressed or coloured purple. They only transfer what is there to be transferred so all debate about fast transfer of compressed files is strictly relative to the final compressed file size, which quite inexplicably :p nobody has bothered to supply, despite the importance of the imformation to the credibility of their argument. But then, I could be wrong. :| No doubt somebody else will tell me if I am. Cheers Billy 8-{):D |
