217171 2004-02-21 22:30:00 It will block messenger, thats what you want stopped isn't it.
Are you talking about IE or MSN explorer that you're using.
Windows explorer is new to me, being a Firefox user.

217172 2004-02-21 22:50:00 To stop WINDOWS messenger go into settings-control panel-admin tools-services and llok down the list for "messenger". Double click on it and change setting to disabled and then click on the stop button.

To stop and remove MICROSOFT messenger start-run and enter
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
and restart PC.

Windows Explorer is often used as an alternative name for My Computer.

Windows explorer is not trying to access the internet as such, it is trying to use svchost to send a network browse request for the network neighborhood.

This is one of the problems with a process aware firewall as the firewall sees svchost accessing the internet so any app or thread that goes near it will trigger an alert.
Many apps and threads will use it for other things as well, not just to access the internet and as such many people get confused as to why such and such application wants to access the internet.

It is also a problem with mickysofts "all in one" idea for network services as it makes it very hard too control network access because you cannot block svchost ( in XP ) from accessing the internet as all internet traffic is handled by it.

Perhaps, one day, someone might make a firewall that can pick out which thread from svchost is being accessed and the problems will be solved.

Looks like I have to allow Windows Explorer to access the Internet?

No, if you are using a network then ZA will still allow it to browse on the network, it just does not need to browse anything on the internet.
Also blocking it can be a good security measure.

217177 2004-02-22 01:58:00 But, if I block it, I won't be able to connect to the Internet. I am on a small network. I've tried to disallow it that will block IE from accessing the Internet, too. Even with my Download Accelerator, the Windows Explorer 'has' to' use DAP to access the Internet. I just fail to understand this. I've scanned my machine with spybot for spyware and it seems to be OK.

Umm.. check that zone alarm is blocking explorer.exe as it might be trying to block svchost.
If all else fails make a manual rule.
