217040 2004-02-22 04:50:00 I have a SB Live and a AC '97 audio chip onboard as well, but I've disabled it in the bios.... are you suggesting I enable it and see what happens?

cheers

217041 2004-02-22 06:30:00 Ok I've removed the SB Live card and installed the drivers for the onboard Intel sound chip, everything works fine in Windows. I don't like this sound chip, I can hardly customize anything and I can't run my X-box audio through it cos I'm using a 5.1 speaker configuration and there are no jacks left (it only comes with 3).

The funny thing is when I had both audio devices in Fedora and I tested the Intel audio chip, using the SB Live as the primary output device, I actually heard the test sound. However when I test the SB Live I didn't hear a thing.

Now I have the Intel audio on the Mobo running only and Fedora picked it up fine, but when I went to do the sound test I heard nothing. One thing though I do hear a hiss coming out of the speakers and when I increase or decrease the volume the hiss goes louder or softer. Now from previous experience with Hi-Fi equipment I have come to the conclusion that it's an input/output (encode/decode in this case) problem somewhere. I know my speakers are connected properly because all the speakers work fine in Windows. So I would think that I have not installed something properly in Fedora, but I'm pretty sure that I have installed XMMS correctly.

Well I'm reasonably satisfied that it is NOT a hardware error I figure I have just done something wrong or havn't done it at all. The problem now is trying to discover what that something is. I guess I will now re-install my SB Live.... and then do more research on what the problem is or at least see if anyone else has had a similar problem.

217042 2004-02-22 06:33:00 Ooops...

Just a little ps.....

Incidently I just ran the XMMS package and Fedora tells me that it's already installed on the system.

So that rules out the possibility of a missing module/package ????

217043 2004-02-22 07:11:00 Ok here's a bit more info in the form of an error message I just got after booting into Fedora.

It goes like this...
__________________________________________________
Informational - artsmessage
__________________________________________________
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
SNDCTL_DSP_STEREO failed - Input/output error
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Does this make any sense? Is it because I have no sound card installed?
Never got this message before!

Back to Google I guess

217044 2004-02-22 10:33:00 aRts.. So you're running KDE...

Okay...

Make sure you DISABLE the OnBoard FULLY in your Bios, and double check it.

Boot Fedora
Let Kudzu run and save all the changes it needs to. Dont argue with it or skip it, go along and make sure it saves the changes!

Shutdown
Put in your SB!Live

Restart your PC and let Kudzu do its thing again.
Save the changes....

Then see how it goes.

After all that, if it still wont go, as root run:
dmesg
post the output.

217045 2004-02-24 22:37:00 Hey Chill

My Onboard AC 97 chip is definitely off, kudzu picked up that it had been "removed". I rebooted twice to make sure everything is ok, then inserted the SB Live card, still no luck.

Chill I don't know how to copy and paste the output for "dmesg" but here are the last few lines in the output.. it think it may be what your looking for.

If thats not enough info post back with how to transefer the outout formt the command line, I came across a similar file at /var/log but it didn't have all the info that I get when executing "dmesg" in the console.

217046 2004-02-25 00:05:00 If you're using a Konsole you should just be able to select the text and right-click on it and choose Copy.

Personally, Im stumped.

Might pay to try the nzlug list if nobody else has any suggestions :-(

Cheers
