2004-02-21 00:38:00 | People, I need some help. I've just bought Freelancer, and in short all the writing in the game is illegible - the letters are cut in half and explanations of icons etc can't be read. When it was loading it told me I have an older driver for the graphics card, so I assume this is the problem. However the PC tells me when I look at Hardware Updates that I have the most current of everything. It's told me this for many moons, and I believed it. I have an older PC with what I assume is an integrated graphics card - I've found the name below that again I presume is my graphics: Intel 82810e DC-133 System and Graphics Controller. So I went to Intel and pretended I knew what I was doing on the site, and after clicking on driver downloads I put the "Intel 82810e" in on the search function, and downloaded what it gave me. It then installed on my PC looking all very professional and like I had the slightest idea I knew what I was doing!! So....I go back to Freelancer and it's still....what's the word.....crap! So I'm stumped, any ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers Tim PS: I fly Flight Simulator 2004 on this PC, albeit with the settings down low, and it goes fine. If that info helps at all.

2004-02-21 01:21:00 | Thanks guys. Maybe someone can give me the link to where I need to go on the Intel site? I've just finished with Driverguide.com, but didn't help much. Should I be downloading a driver for my "chipset" as opposed to graphics??????? Might as well be speaking Swahili !!

2004-02-21 01:37:00 | It's probably not a matterof drivers. As Metla says, it's most likely the system requirements. A quick look tells me that Microsoft expect a 600MHz CPU with 128 MB of memory. The other requirement is for a 16MB memory card. Try going into the BIOS and finding the setting for the shared memory used by the video. It might be set at 8MB, which could explain the problems you are having.

2004-02-21 02:03:00 | OK, I went into the BIOS, which you'll understand for a novice is like relieving for Bill Gates for a month, and couldn't see anything called "shared memory" or similar. However I did see "ON-CHIP VIDEO WINDOW SIZE 64MB", but don't know if that's the same thing. Can you give me the name of the BIOS heading and setting I'm looking for? If I find it, is it changeable?? I note though that Flight Sim asks for a 8MB video card, and Freelancer asks for 16, so I guess that's where I've gone wrong. Well, I guess I'm up the proverbial creek, I just assumed in my naivety that if my PC could run something as full-on as the latest Flight Simulator then it would handle most things.... Happy days, should have stuck with a PS2 game instead!!!! Tim

2004-02-22 01:25:00 | Post the brand of your BIOS (e . g . AMI, Pheonix, etc) . Any such setting would probably be "very close" to the one you did find . Otherwise, have a look at any memory related pages . The motherboard manual (if all else fails, RTM . . . . ;-)) should tell you . :D

2004-02-22 03:31:00 | Hi Graham, I hardly know what a BIOS is, let alone know the brand. The PC is from an insurance claim, so as it was a case of "take this and like it", I didn't have the chance to specify what I wanted or pick and choose. Anyway, I've decided today that I'm going online with Dell tomorrow (gulp) and gonna get a new one, so problem will go away. About to post a ? about RAM and graphics cards - hopefully I'll here from you. Cheers Tim
