| 218529 | 2004-02-27 04:47:00 | Is the telecom network coverage covering Great Barrier Island or is it not covered by any texting network? As I'm going out there for a week or so with some mates and yeah :) Chris |

Isn't it a waste of time going to the Barrier and wanting to remain in contact with the banal reaches of text messaging - or cell phones? When we go sailing in the Gulf, family / friends / office know my cell phone goes on once a day - for an hour at midday. Either side of that, tough. Emergency contact still available thru VHF, though. Relax, enjoy one of the few quiet, and pristine places left in NZ and leave the gadgets behind. ;\ |

But GB is also unique ... check in with the local policeman on arrival, give him your contacts, names of those in your party, your planned itinerary and timings etc. Should anything untoward happen, you'll find the islanders will respond fast to help you and their own bush telegraph far more effective and faster than any text messaging. Seriously, let the local PC know. :| |
