218596 2004-02-27 14:51:00 Hmmm - possibly due to the hour of the day perhaps,
I didn't find the copies of the early releases as easily
as I used to, but you could try here. (www.ibiblio.org)
A younger, more awake brain should have no trouble.

218597 2004-02-27 16:21:00 Megaman and ilikelinux>

Both of you should know by now that there are many uses for a 486 other than <quote>"The bin"</quote>

Vector Linux will run on that box, not with a GUI with only 4MB RAM though (Well.. It'd be dog slow, but its Xfce 3.x so it's your best bet).

Not much change of getting anything over 8 gig in that baby either sorry...

Hope this helps

218598 2004-02-27 19:01:00 He's a thought may not be practical tho mind you .

Could try a CD based Lixux if you have a CD drive in your machine .
Knoppix KDE 3 . 1 or there's Lindows OS 4 . 0 that runs off CD also .

218599 2004-02-27 19:26:00 well provided it can take a new modem, it could act as a proxy.

218601 2004-02-28 01:16:00 Oh I only have a 200mb HDD and Peanut linux is (340 Mb) I think Gods-Hitman (1419)
218602 2004-02-28 01:40:00 A 486 DX2-66 runs nicely . Just don't put a GUI on it . The minumum memory I've had working (apart from Elks) is 6MB . (That's 4MB on board and a 2MB ISA card) . It's still working -- a 386SX20 with 40MB disk . That's got Slackware with 2 . 0 . 9 kernel .

A server should have a bit more memory . . . the more the better . . . for buffers . 32 MB would be a good start . I've got one running like that and it handles DNS, FTP, and a documentation collection .

Just don't use one of the modern user-fiendly distributions . I gave up trying to convince RH7 . 2 to install on a 350MB disk . . . it kept loading Emacs and all the interpreters after I told it not to . :_| I actually loaded some of the Slackware floppy images onto an 8mm tape and installed from the tape .

218603 2004-02-28 01:51:00 Hi Hitman,

As Chill suggested check out Vector Linux (www.vectorlinux.com) and another alternative is Monkey Linux (http:). Both of these are very small and will run a minimalist linux.

Obviously KDE and Gnome GUI's are out of the question with only 8MB RAM :)
