219105 2004-03-01 00:31:00 Another one to look at is the Panasonic SD50 MP3 player. It stores the music on SD cards as opposed to a limited size drive. You can have several cards with different music etc and also grab cards of different sizes. 1 AAA battery will run for about 31 hours so is damn cheap on batteries etc also. It also won't skip or damage the media inside from shaking or knocks. They are going for about $399 at the moment. Worth a look anyway. dipstick01 (445)
219106 2004-03-01 00:47:00 Im about to get the mzn10.Where can I get the plugin from?!! yingxuan (3330)
219107 2004-03-01 03:03:00 The machine itself may be cheap, but the SD cards are extremely expensive.

Flash memory devices are appealing because of their small size and lack of moving parts, but I would advise avoiding them because they have an enormously expensive cost per megabyte compared to an iPod or CD/MP3 player.

219108 2004-03-01 03:09:00 128mb SD Card at Retravision = $139.00

Reusable and transferrable between brands and technologies. i.e toshiba laptops, Panasonic products, IPAQ's,Cellphones, Canon Cameras ( some ) and also can be used as a data transfer medium. Not that expensive I think.

219109 2004-03-01 03:16:00 I think you can get those mini cd-r players now. They are about the size of an MD player, but only play the little mini cd-rs that hold 21minutes of music/185mb - 203mb. Now they are pretty cool IMHO. Much more compact than your traditional cd walkman.

I wonder if they'll bring out mini-dvds, that would be a winner. Probably like 2Gb a mini-dvd.

Here's the one I was looking at.

(sorry it's not properly formatted - I keep forgetting how)

You might be able to find a better price than Noel Leemings, although under $200 isn't too bad (I was contemplating it at $279). Doubly good if you plan to use it in the car. With a budget of $250, you could probably afford a Belkin Tunecast (think that's right), for wireless connection to your stereo.

Happy hunting

219112 2004-03-01 04:13:00 My point was this:

Panasonic SD player + 128Mb card = $520 = $4 per megabyte
Apple iPod mini (4Gb) = $500 = $0.125 per megabyte
Sony CD/MP3 player + 5 CDRWs = $200 = $0.06 per megabyte

Of course, the more media you buy for the Panasonic SD player, the more expensive it becomes on a per megabyte basis, relative to the other two options. It would therefore be extremely foolish to buy a solid state player if you need to carry more than an hour or two of music.

219113 2004-03-01 06:00:00 Very many opinions here, as one would expect .

I've been through several options in recent times .

Alasta sums up the relative costs very well .

Firstly a Rio flash mem player . Great sound, but limited playtime unless one spends plenty on mem cards .

My ancient CD walkman had given up, so time to checkout a new CD/MP3 player . I was able to try several .

#1 a parallel import Panasonic @ a good price . Great sound, but no ID3 display info of track & artist names . With the many 100's of mp3 tracks on a disk, IMO this is essential to find & know whats playing .

#2 a DSE Digitor . Once again great sound, plus a display of ID3 info . But the instructions to use & navigate the display were unclear & confusing .

#3 a Sony Atrac3plus D NE511 . Great sound, & a very good ID3 display, clearly showing track & artists names, easily able to change directories/folders for selecting tracks . I have burn't several CD's each of about 200 tracks(10 hours) . The music can be separated into several folders for easy selection . Sony recommend burning as "Disc at once" which seems to work fine .

I am very satisfied with this player which right now is on special at most DSE stores for $149 . 95 . Highly recommended .
