And Tiwai Point ranks 65 out of the 231 so not insignificant by any means. ;)

Shame to see them go.

1335057 2013-04-02 04:45:00 And your point?

Why does everything need a point ?

I just found it very interesting in the number of plants there are around the world
Some big countries only have 1 - eg the UK.

And I was staggered by the number in China. (but some are very small)

And there seems to be quite a bit of shut down capacity indicating an over supply.

And given the fact that, that is where the market is (world manufacturing base) it probably makes our plant look very dear with the high wages the guys get (I heard $1500 a week)

And yes Tiwai is one of the medium sized ones.

1335059 2013-04-02 05:15:00 It will.

Rio Tinto can't sell it.
They have about 6 plants they have been trying to sell for the last few years.

I feel deeply sorry for all the people of Invercargill because that is going to create one hell of a hole in their economy.

Houses wont sell.
And they will never be able to replace a business like that.

At least the workers will have about 3 years warning the way the contract works.

1335061 2013-04-02 05:46:00 Nobody can compete with slave labour

I have been saying for a couple of years now that the only way out of the world GFC is for western wages to fall to the level of Asian wages.

Then we will all compete on our natural resources, and our skill and talents and size of our markets etc.

There are big crashes coming in France and Italy and Japan.
