Ohh good point..

1335208 2013-04-03 21:54:00 One reason I oppose in general Maori names from being introduced into the English language (there are some cases where it's 100% appropriate) is because it's wrong anyway . This is how you are supposed to write Maori " rānei i tō rātou mōhio ki te reo Māori" Note all the accents on the words . "ranei i to ratou mohio te reo Maori" isn't the same as the latter . It's missing the accents, although it doesn't change the meaning (much) the 2nd version lacks the appropriate accents to tell you how to pronounce the word . Effectively it's wrong . Not correct . Bad .

To me there's no point sticking Maori name on something for the sake of political correctness if no one can spell or say it right . Why? Because it's just a pain in the ass, especially with computers because no voice recognition really supports Maori (although google now is *much* better, it gets Auckland not "Oakland") and you would have to include alternate strings for accented and "standard characters for searches and everything else that involves matching letters/words/sounds .

As I said before, if the Maori wish to use their native names, that's absolutely fine . I support that, heck I'd even go as far as giving them funding for it (they should be supported in supporting their culture) but I don't think it works out very well if you try and inject it into the English language, especially when the Maori word becomes "europeanised" due to pronunciation corruption anyway .

It's a touchy subject to be frank though, there's always going to be some very traditionalist Maori who wish to see the country emblazoned with Maori names, and some people who would rather see the country without a single Maori In sight . It's one of the things you have to push through .

I do feel for the (non Maori) Polynesians and other islanders who come here, they get no aid, scholarships or recognition because they're not Maori but they often live in similar or worse conditions and (some of them) work damn hard to make a living . Then all you see on TV is "we need to make life better for Maori kids" - That actually sickens me, it's not about NZ + the Maori . We are one country and we should be focusing our attention on all demographics, Asians, Germans, Maori and Islanders . Everyone gets the same treatment, or so they should .

Now that's going to cost us heaps when those Travesty Of Waitangi fellas have finished their hooleys and whooehs. There's going to be major koha there.

It's called "positive discrimination" - but whichever way you cut it, it's still discrimination, favouring one section of the general populace over another.

As The Error Guy says - where are the equivalent handouts for the Polynesian, Dutch and Asians. What about handouts for the poor 'differently-abled' blondes? Or those vertically-disadvantaged people under 5 foot 3 inches?

If you make exceptions for some, you're going to piss off others.

When you're bringing up your kids, you don't favour one over the other - otherwise you destroy their sense of fair play and they become ill-tempered, anti-social and a burden to others... Ooooh.... wait....
