1335758 2013-04-07 22:26:00 Being welcomed onto a marae like that is pretty cool.

But a diplomatic envoy to a Naval base? I fail to see the link between our "military" and our indigenous culture.

1335759 2013-04-07 22:39:00 I do not object to these welcomes at all I think they are and should stay as part of our culture, but some of them do go on too long.

Recently a change of Headmaster at a local Primary School resulted in 5 year olds having to sit for 1.5 hours until the Powhiri was completed. Just a little long I would think.:sleep:sleep

You would if you saw the make up of a RNZN ship. Most of the sailors that is the non technical people on a ship like Sonarmen, Radar Plotters,Gunners, Com Ops are maoris. The technical people like the Electricians, Marine fitters, Weapons techs are White. You would never call a Navy artificer, fitter, mech, techs a sailor he will punch your lights out.
Go ashore on a gunners run and watch the fireworks start after about 2 hours believe me I have seen them in action when unlucky enough to be in the same bar.

1335761 2013-04-07 23:16:00 Personally I would feel disgusted if some half naked obese man jumped around in front of me, sticking his tongue out and rolling his eyes while uttering guttural sounds. If I wasn't used to it I might be scared too. It is Maori culture, not New Zealand culture and should be confined to the Marais. There is no New Zealand culture, each resident race has its own culture. mzee (3324)

You are telling me I did a month long teachers course (teaching you how to teach) and about the only thing I remember was that the attention span of an adult student in a lecture was 1 hour max in the best case. Worst case humorless dour teacher teaching stuff you are not interested in about 5 minutes.
For a 5 year old kid that's pretty close to child abuse and I am serious. if it was my kid I would complaining to higher authority.

1335763 2013-04-08 00:07:00 We were forced to learn Maori and the Bible back in Primary. Two things I hate and two things I never use. I distinctly remember the maori teacher (however nice and friendly she was) saying that the Maori culture was OUR culture. Although I didn't say anything at the time (I was only 9) even then I knew that was a load of ****.

My culture is me, a white guy, doing white guy things.

1335764 2013-04-08 00:07:00 Please don't judge an entire nation on the words or behaviour of one person. She is entirely responsible for her diplomacy, or lack thereof. If somebody from this country was overseas and made such comments on the welcome performed at any official greeting; I'd question whether they should be representing us. Her representation is for the Danes to decide.

Regardless of whether we feel happy with how our visitors are greeted is a something of which we all have our own opinion. Would you make comments, which could be taken as an insult. if you were confronted by bare breasted dancers from a foreign country? Especially in an official capacity. Okay, guys, keep it seemly! You're not the Duke of Edinburgh. A little finding out about the culture of a different country before setting off in all your glory is not really a hard thing to do.

Personally, I think those who decide these things should keep in mind the sight and sound of the lovely Maori women performers and performances are a delight and are still representative of our country.

1335765 2013-04-08 00:11:00 We should greet international MPs, or anyone for the matter, with a warm handshake and the offer of a cold stubbie. That is what a real NZ welcome should look like. wratterus (105)

I and practically every non homosexual NZ male would love to see bare breasted women dance any time any where. I was always a patron of topless bar chicks in Australian pubs sometimes travelling for several hours to get to the pub for the 12 to 2 topless bar chicks session. You can say breasts aren't sexual to me until you are blue in the face. This is not comparable with a threatening war dance.
