| 1335928 | 2013-04-09 07:58:00 | See my first point ("All the info you want" &c). But quickly going through the salient points, they've made $25m of grants toward education, varying amounts to tertiary studies and other educational purposes. 400 households were supported during the Christchurch earthquakes, and they've made grants for further relief. A savings scheme has been introduced with contributions by under 16yo subsidised 4:1, and 1:1 for adults. Without a full disclosure and/or audit we don't know. Not that we have to. All in all, I think they've acted with prudence and with integrity. :) Re "Many of the sound tourist-based holdings Ngai Tahu have would have buyers lined up ", I forgot about Shotover Jet!Yeah, but that $25m to education is to Maori for education in Maori proticol, language, studies etc etc, which doesnt really help anyone or everyone. And some of the money most likely didnt even go to education, I know of one Chch Maori trust that bought an $8000 coffee making machine for their staff room from a Maori Health Education Grant for example, and another that spent $14000 on computer systems. The 400 households in Chch would be Ngai Tahu members, it is a shame they couldnt have helped everyone who was in the same situation and needed help, not just their own. Those people who got help, still would have got help from Govt handouts, Red Cross, Sally Army and other non-Maori specific groups out to help everyone regardless of race. A savings scheme has been introduced with contributions by under 16yo subsidised 4:1, and 1:1 for adults. Only applies if you are Ngai Tahu and does not help the lower class who struggle to save anyway, so is only feathering the nest of the already rich. So really all this saying how great they are doing, doesnt really go anywhere, either to better the people or the country. Getting back on topic, if the Maori want charge the power company then the power company wants to pass it straight back on to its Maori customers. |
