1335187 2013-04-03 00:32:00 Lets be honest, who does this change benefit? If the Maori want to put their name on their maps that's fine, if the Maori ran the mapping facilities of NZ then they could change names. Unfortunately Europeans discovered NZ, named it and put it in their maps.

No, it's not racist. It's how it works. It's why China is China on an english maps and Zhong gou in Chinese. New Zealand is New Zealand to us but is Xin Xi Lan to them.

If the Maori want to make amendments to the names of places I'm all for that, they can keep it to themselves, the name has no significance or meaning to anyone else. You can tell me all about how much it means to YOU but the reality is to every visitor and citizen who doesn't speak Maori it doesn't make any form of sense whatsoever.

Leave it at North and South. Even an english name change will promote unseccesary debate and anger. Does it work now? Yes. Good, don't **** with it!

1335188 2013-04-03 00:43:00 After living in this land for 20+ years, I can't even count up to 3 (yes, it's THREE) in Maori. Maybe, I don't really bother to learn! Or, maybe there isn't any incentive to learn that language! :D

Not even the Maori themselves as a general populace care for their own language, that's why it's dying out:

I agree, The Error Guy for Prime Minister! :D

The Error Guy ftw!!

If they were to ever rename them, just have it as "North New Zealand" and "South New Zealand". I mean, it's still crap, but at least it's english.

1335191 2013-04-03 01:35:00 The same old moans and groans.
This topic was done to death on this forum 4 years ago when the initial announcement about the names was made.
And the same (deliberate?) misunderstanding about the proposed maori names.
Where does it say that you have to use them?
Perhaps I'm wrong in assuming a reasonable degree of literacy amongst forum members.

1335195 2013-04-03 02:18:00 Whilst we are all having a bit of fun with the idiocy of the suggestion we shouldn’t loose sight of the fact that this is a Government initiative and they even changed the law in 2012 to accommodate the nonsense.

Quote from article:

“The NZGB Act was amended in December 2012, and now provides for alternative naming”.

And guess who will be paying for the nonsense. Yep, you and I again.
