1335962 2013-04-09 03:21:00 The current economic situation is almost entirely due to their mismanagement and the slavish following of their ridiculous and naive policies.

What a joke.

She did what had to be done. Yes, plenty of lives were ruined - thats how the world works. Anyone who thinks the mortally wounded British industry could have survived the rise of manufacturing in the East, are kidding themselves. It was the closest thing to a coup de gras.

Without her, and her policies they would have been in the same position as Greece.

1335963 2013-04-09 03:22:00 Margaret Thatcher and President Reagan really broke communism and freed Eastern Europe.

Their economic "mis-management" is really globalization.

Globalization has been going on since the 1800's when the British started getting their textiles made in India etc and buying their wheat from the USA

Do you think if Maggie had kept the coal mines open and the steel mills they'd still be selling Cortinas and Morris Minors ?

+1

If you didn't live in the UK during her evil reign you don't know how hated she was. Probably the most unpopular PM ever.

She was hard, and made hard decisions, but she put the Great back in Britain not to mention saving the Falkland Islanders from torture and death at the hands of the Arges. I think there will be just as many people who liked her as didnt.

I did and yes she was harsh and hard nosed when she needed to be, unfortunately like all good leaders she then went too far and its was the dreaded Poll tax that did her in the end, up to that point she was doing well. And I'm not really a conservative voter

1335969 2013-04-11 09:07:00 I remember the seventies in Britain all too well, the country in continuous and increasing decline, incompetent and weak political leaders, incompetent and complaisant business management, powerful and politically motivated left wing trade unions pushing their political agenda to the detriment of their members and the country as a whole. British manufacturing had an absolutely **** reputation for shoddy overpriced product delivered late and laden with defects.
The British car industry was only kept afloat by corporate purchases, people spending their own money wouldn't buy British and who would blame them.
Strikes, and yet more strikes were the order of the day. After a long and damaging strike, the Pilkington Glass factory in Hull told the workers that the plant was losing money and would have shut down if there was any more Industrial trouble, so the workers walked out because of Management threats to close the Plant. Contractors came up from London, cleaned out all the plant worth keeping over a weekend, and there was a "For Sale" sign on the Factory the following Tuesday.

The ship building Industry was on it's last legs, and British Steel got a line in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest corporate loss in a year just short of 600 million pounds, they could have mothballed the plants, and kept on paying everyone and lost less money. A new modern Steel Plant in Wales at Ebbw Vale lay idle because the Unions refused to work it, with a similar story at a new plant at Redcar on Teeside.

A new Dock at Liverpool built at a cost of 35 million pounds was boycotted by the Unions, and I believe it never went into operation. Just a few examples of the British disease.
Everyone was striking for more, Firefighters went on strike, to be replaced by Servicemen using old military fire fighting kit - the Green Goddess'. And of course the Miners" strikes and Comrade Scargill, anyone living in Britain suffered at the hands of these Union dictator thugs.

Britain was down, and well on the way to being out. Inflation was rampant. Margaret Thatcher put paid to it, and bought a level of recovery to the country, there were casualties, but there would have been even more casualties( including those who blame their loss of employment on Mrs Thatcher) if she hadn't had the courage to tackle the problem head on.
Margaret Thatcher succeeded because no one in the British Political Classes in any of the Parties had the balls to tackle a problem that was going to irretrievably destroy the country. In the early 90s she was stabbed in the back by the mediocrity of the Tory party, and Britain has once again got on the downhill slide poverty and irrelevance under the uninspired leadership of Major, ineffectual and weak, Blair dishonest and self serving, Brown incompetent and totally uninspiring to now Cameron, untrustworthy, incompetent, weak and totally self serving.

Without doubt Margaret Thatcher was the best peacetime leader that Britain has had in well over her century, the Thatcher years saw a revival in Britain and for a time a resurrection of self belief - all that has been thrown away by the pathetic excuse for leaders that followed her. The dishonour of being the worst leader in Britain is keenly contested, there are several well qualified to take the dishonour, but I think the award should go to Cameron, because he performance has starred in under 3 years,, and he has another 2 years to wreck havoc before he is tossed out to let Labour finish the job of destroying Britain.

The best days work I ever did was to move to New Zealand with my wife and 3 young children on my retirement from the RAF, I have not been back in 30 years and have no intention of ever going back - it would be too upsetting.

At least I'm not afraid to point out his failings, which so many are just encase he has his spies looking over your shoulder. And its true his middle name should be dementia instead of demented
