1356619 2013-10-31 03:14:00 Avast is free and ok, it will try to install chrome if you let it though.
One worry regarding this and your other thread is that some malware blocks the installation of programs, especially MSSE.

How recent are these problems? it might be worth trying a system restore. Also maybe try the Eset free online scanner.

1356620 2013-10-31 03:52:00 hi Greg
had a similar problem a while back and this fixed it for me
1. Quit all Windows programs.
2. Click Start, type Run in the Search box and then press Enter, type msiexec /unregister in the Open box, and then click OK.
3. Click Start, type Run in the Search box and then press Enter, type msiexec /regserver in the Open box, and then click OK.
4. Restart your computer. Thanks, tried both but no result for either.

1356621 2013-10-31 04:10:00 Looks like you can get this error if some antispyware / AV program is still on the system too. Looks like a rootkit can also cause this error, and stop MSE from installing. Get tdsskiller run it, if it finds anything select cure then reboot Speedy Gonzales (78)
1356622 2013-10-31 07:49:00 Thanks for all the suggestions - tried them all to no avail. I'm having other quirky problems eg can't install my scanner drivers, so although It's quite a hassle I'm gonna format and reinstall Windows. Greg (193)

1356624 2013-11-03 22:16:00 personally I prefer MSE as I witnessed it clean virus's that other so called top of the line commercial virus checkers haven't even detected ie the FBI virus and its variants, but as we all know every virus checker has a weakness and the only true prevention is dont turn your pc on, Now where's the fun in that. beama (111)
1356625 2013-11-03 22:41:00 Every antivirus software will at some time find viruses that the others haven't (yet). And some just happen to be better than others.

But since a standard AV is always one step behind the virus writers (The virus must first be released and infect some people before it is detected and added to signature files) they are still not the best, even with heuristics. Which is why I like Comodo's Defense+. I whitelist known good programs and default block everything else. And of course I run a traditional AV too.
