You cannot help the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer Gee, I had not heard that quote before, if its from Abraham Lincoln its still true today. |

I thought I'd better check it ... here's what Wiki has to say "An outspoken political conservative, Rev. Boetcker is perhaps best remembered for his authorship of a pamphlet entitled The Ten Cannots that emphasizes freedom and responsibility of the individual on himself. Originally published in 1916, it is often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln. The error apparently stems from a leaflet printed in 1942 by a conservative political organization called the Committee for Constitutional Government. The leaflet bore the title "Lincoln on Limitations" and contained some genuine Lincoln quotations on one side and the "Ten Cannots" on the other, with the attributions switched. The genuine Lincoln quotations may have been from an address on March 21, 1864 in which Lincoln said "Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another; but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built." [1] The mistake of crediting Lincoln for "The Ten Cannots" has been repeated many times since, notably by Ronald Reagan in his address to the 1992 Republican National Convention in Houston.[2][3]" Worth repeating from that Wiki article are the "10 Cannots" - and the "7 National Crimes" You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help little men by tearing down big men. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot build character and courage by destroying men's initiative and independence. And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves. Boetcker also spoke of the "Seven National Crimes":[4] I don’t think. I don’t know. I don’t care. I am too busy. I leave well enough alone. I have no time to read and find out. I am not interested. Whomever the author, the words are far reaching. Mrs Thatcher apparently carried in her trademark handbag, a newspaper clipping of that quotation. :) |

I remember reading a few old Giles cartoons from the Daily Express which featured her, even today the humor is relevant. Two things that never loose meaning over time, good comedy and good leaders. |

Mine is that most of what she did in office as P.M. was OTT and I reckon she caused more damage to the UK than Germany did in WW2. Our social and industrial structure has been damaged beyond repair. I admired her for her fortitude but she was misguided and stubborn beyond belief. May she rest in peace. I have to agree. I spent a year in the UK before she came to power, then visited UK again after she had had her way. The first trip, UK was a caring place. The second trip, poverty everywhere if you care to look. It's PC to speak fondly of the dead but the truth ought to trump political correctness |

The current economic situation is almost entirely due to their mismanagement and the slavish following of their ridiculous and naive policies. |

The current economic situation is almost entirely due to their mismanagement and the slavish following of their ridiculous and naive policies. Margaret Thatcher and President Reagan really broke communism and freed Eastern Europe. Their economic "mis-management" is really globalization. Globalization has been going on since the 1800's when the British started getting their textiles made in India etc and buying their wheat from the USA Do you think if Maggie had kept the coal mines open and the steel mills they'd still be selling Cortinas and Morris Minors ? |
