Ngati Pukenga was left virtually landless after the Crown initiated military conflict in 1864 and subsequently confiscated large tracts of land in the Western Bay of Plenty. This was despite the fact Ngati Pukenga had honoured an early agreement with the Crown not to engage in the conflict. Settlement in these circumstances sounds OK to me. It's not the same issue as that raised in the original post, either. Your post is a slightly inflammatory smoke trail in my opinion. |

Well the problem with these claims is the History is very selective and often challenged between historians . What you are looking at in this instance is the Spin to support the claim . The reality is the Maori owned no land . The Tribes just owned what they could defend . They may have owned it one day but it became spoils of war the next . Boundary pegs werent heard of . However, it is not just this settlement that is the issue, it is the continuous barrage of claims for everything, Coast, Lakes, Fish Quota, Money, Water, Radio Spectrum, you name it . You can guarantee there are Part Maori out there filling there own pockets at every opportunity with little or nothing filtering through to the Rank & File . Maybe you can ease my pain by telling me a success story where the Rank & File Maori have benefited from the Billions in Waitangi Settlements already distributed? However, if you want to support the claims, I have no objection as long as you reimburse me for what I have unwillingly contributed courtesy of the Government . And, if your conscience urges you to contribute a little extra, I will find you the contact for Tuku Morgan, he will see you right . ;) |

| 1335916 | 2013-04-09 00:40:00 | It's sillyness. What if they got the response, "no sorry we won't pay you to store water" then what? will they command the rain to stop? dig a new river to empty the lake? Good luck getting resource consent for that. No one's storing water in Taupo, nature is responsible for that. All the energy company is doing is tapping into the energy of the natural flow out of taupo. Sure they regulate the flow a bit but if they stopped the lake wouldn't magically empty. | dugimodo (138) | ||
