1335730 2013-04-07 01:45:00 What an atrocious lump of undimplomatic crap.

I don't really care how much (or little) support you have for Maori culture, you don't come to another country who welcomes you by doing something special and then ridicule it. The lack of tolerance for other nations & their customs frankly disturbs me.

Have some damn respect, it's not like I go over there and laugh at your retarded attempt at english, or the fact that you primitively welcome me bearing gifts of hatchets and other wood working tools.

Rather pathetic specemin of human life

1335731 2013-04-07 01:50:00 Every country has their own set of strange customs which visitors may find hard to get used to. This makes foreign countries all the more interesting to visit. I wonder if this Danish MP bothered to do her homework so that she knew how to behave and what to expect when the powhiri was performed. Bobh (5192)

It's not about how much we support the culture, but how political visitors treat their host countries customs.

1335734 2013-04-07 02:32:00 And if they find it primitive and ridiculous, they should keep it to themselves Cicero (40)
1335735 2013-04-07 02:49:00 I think what some of you are overlooking is that “First Impressions” and your “Shop Window” are very important when entering a country, any country.

I remember coming home from Aus at the Auckland Airport and there were a group of people in another area through a glass partition. I guess they were dignitaries from overseas because next thing this ugly, super obese, Maori, in a grass skirt and covered in scribble, leaps out waving a spear and carrying on like a right loony. Well, there was this big guy in the entourage, probably a minder, that got a hell of a fright and I would have bet all money he was going to bend this Maori over and stick the spear where the sun don’t shine.

Trust me, it will happen one day. Somebody will forget to tell someone about this NZ BS.

And even 100 odd years ago, Banjo Patterson wrote in his poem on The Maori Wool:

"The haka is a striking dance—the sort they don’t allow
In any place more civilized than Rooti-iti-au."

And that is still how a lot of people see it.

1335736 2013-04-07 03:34:00 I agree.
It is primitive, ridiculous and confrontational.
Completely unnecessary and makes NZ look like a TPLAC (Tin-Pot Little African Country) or the thug on the street corner threatening people.

Last time I saw anyone else waving something around stamping their feet and sticking out their tongue my 7yr old was throwing a tantrum, although this was three years ago, he has grown out of that now.
