| 1335224 | 2013-04-03 09:59:00 | There was another concept I liked. A small car driven by compressed air from large carbon fibre bottles under the chassis. Never heard any more about that one. They're still around... mdi.lu |

Watch the top gear episode where they give them a try and you'll see what I mean. As well as the time and power required to recharge them and the limited range you also have to replace the batteries every 5-10 years which is expensive and not environmentally friendly. |

| 1335229 | 2013-04-04 03:15:00 | Another way would be 2 have battery stations instead of petrol stations and the cars could swap out their batteries. Faster for the user, but it still doesn't solve the problem of the batteries themselves that only last a few years and which require significant industry to manufacture etc. And at the moment the batteries are non-standard and 'non-removable' anyway. I like the compressed air idea, you have a tank which is just like a petrol tank, in the sense that it can be refilled almost indefinitely. The content is just air, which is readily available and requires nothing special to obtain, all that's required is a compressor. But whether the actual air engines in the cars are efficient enough to be useful for most people is another question... |

I think that one, or something very much like it, is running in India, they don't mind cheap or ugly, they want transport. Any country that gave their public servants Morris Oxfords from the late 50's early '60's (the round dumpy model) to drive around in, and was still building Triumph Heralds within living memory has got some idea of how to mobilise their masses. At the budget end, a family of five or more on a motor scooter is truly a sight to behold. I was there in 1973 and again a couple of years back and not much had changed.
