1335167 2013-04-02 20:24:00 OK, and let's call North and South Korea by their true Korean names too then shall we? In the interests of consistency....

And I'm sure South Africa will have a Zulu name that no-one can pronounce too!

1335168 2013-04-02 20:35:00 Bottom island, Middle island and Top island sound about right. The Chathams can be "off to the side islands" The Error Guy (14052)
1335169 2013-04-02 20:41:00 I'm sure they have better things to do than all these rubbish.

That's why NZ is such a poor nation - they spent too (far, far too much) time on doing all sorts of rubbish, and no time for real stuff like economy, education, healthcare, etc. Or, just not capable of doing real productive and constructiive works.

1335171 2013-04-02 20:59:00 North Korea is really "The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea" in English

I'd hate to think what it is in Korean.

The New Zealand Geographic Board (NZGB) has announced it will publicly consult on proposals to adopt new names for New Zealand’s two main islands.

People sitting at desks getting paid by the public with nothing to do are dangerous

NZGB chair Dr Don Grant says the move comes as a result of a review of the official naming of the North and South islands.

“At this time we noted that the existing English names were recorded names, rather than official names,” says Mr Grant. “They appeared on LINZ’s maps, charts and other official publications but had never been formalized under the NZGB act.

“The NZGB agreed in principle that the English names should be formalised, that – as a related pair – both islands should also be assigned Māori alternative names, and that all of the names should be formalised at the same time.”

Who the hell drives these sorts of “needs’ anyway?

After consulting with iwi, the NZGB decided that the most fitting alternative names are ‘Te Ika-a-Māui’ (for the North Island) and ‘Te Waipounamu’ (for the South Island).

So here we have stuffy bureaucrats actually asking iwi if they would like to change the name? And they said yes?

Can you spell: Creating Work To Create My Own Relevance?

The renaming would give people a choice of language, according to Mr Grant.

“This means that the two main islands of New Zealand could soon be referred to officially as the ‘North Island’ or ‘Te Ika-a-Māui’ and the ‘South Island’ or ‘Te Waipounamu’.”

I actually call Mt Taranaki, Mt Taranaki, but I really don’t see people rushing towards Te Ika-a-Māui in a damn hurry.

“Oh, I just popped to Te Ika-a-Māui to see the rellies”.

Nah.

Good skills!

I have studied a few languages in an amatuer way and Koreans are very proud of the fact that they have an alphabetical language like our Roman alphabet .

Whereas their two neighbors China and Japan are "stuck" with character based languages .

Although I note that Chairman Mao did think about changing to the Roman alphabet in the late 1950's
