1356663 2013-10-21 06:49:00 Hi All
Has anyone experience how well it works to upgrade W8 to W8 Pro on a working machine? Can installed programs(office and graphics) handle it, or do a lot of them have to be reinstalled?

Thanks.

Ok I've got the new laptop with windows 8.
Have bought Windows 8 Pro and want to install. What is best way; format C: or install on C: with a 'windows old' folder. I would leave Recovery partition as is.
Would be nice to have feedback.:)

1356665 2013-10-22 04:14:00 Well if you want to keep the recovery partition you may have to just do an upgrade and dont format it. Probably better if you do install on c as some programs wont work properly, if it isnt on C

Altho most of the pc's I've had, I've just wiped the whole thing, inc the recovery partition. I didn't really need it. Win8 has a refresh option in it anyway, but you may or do need the dvd

What a pain to get the laptop to boot from the dvd:(

1356667 2013-10-22 04:38:00 Whats it doing or not doing when you try to boot from dvd? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1356668 2013-10-22 04:51:00 Being windows 8 it will have the UEFI boot protection activated.

This is a security option in the BIOS that disables DVD's, USB Drives from booting first. You can try as much as you like, since its enabled you wont get it to boot from a DVD.

You have to enter the BIOS and disable it. Some have the boot menu options that you can select the Optical Drive as the first boot device as well.

Got a HP here at the moment - its actually setup with some sort of RAID setup that I cant disable. I cloned the COMPLETE drive first, and then wiped the HDD clean including the recovery partition, when trying to install windows it wont install as its looking for the recovery partition, and the RAID throws its toys out the cot. Its W7, BUT the moral is make a image of the complete drive first, in case something goes wrong.

1356669 2013-10-22 05:39:00 I managed to get into the bios ok. Disabled fast boot, and disabled secure boot. I managed to get the dvd to boot once though wasn't sure about the wiping of C:. Hence the 2nd post.
Haven't managed to boot to dvd since. I'll try later tonight.

after getting used to the diffrent bios + boot setup I quite like it now. It took some unusual steps( and lots of online help) to be able to install the pro version. It's almost working, just some drivers to update. I doubt that I will update to 8.1 any time soon.
thanks :-)
