220543 2004-03-08 07:03:00 Hi Steve_L,can you explain what you mean by concurrently, please.Do I have to
disable AVG and stop it from loading before installing Avast? Thanks.

In the last week or so there downloading there updates have been slow, not too sure what is up, I might e-mail then in a few weeks time if this does not solve it self.

You can run more than one AV at the same time. No need to alter AVG when you have another AV running. Concurrently = "at the same time". Many people run two AV's on their PC's because no single AV program is 100% effective (although NOD32 probably comes close). The reasoning is that if one AV misses a virus, the other will get it. I have found this to be the case.

220548 2005-06-20 09:04:00 O dear, had just been reading up about this type of thing on another site, I will keep this short and simple and for others that culd be interested in chasing up and comparing.

Please visit: www.bitdefender.com

and you wish to view the "Professional Plus verison at the latest of 8.0.2

I have been using bit defender for a long time, very happy with it and will still carry on with it and alot better than others including kaspersky (formally avp)

220549 2005-06-20 12:03:00 i have to say i have tried all the free anti virus apps and a few paid for ones and gotta say avg has been the best for me.
And i have to admit that nortons is very bad for interfering with the comp performance and 99 out of 100 probs is not a virus but nortons behaving badly (mostly out of date definitions). And or some people trying to run 2 antivirus progs at once. I gotta say that just does not work at all.
And my final note is the worst comp problems have been for me (because i fix others is). a) spyware
b) out of date nortans
c) no firewall.
and finally,
d)all of the above.
I believe if you can update and stay on top of all of the above you will be fine.
No matter what antivirus you choose or firewall.
But i must admit zone alarm is very good and so is avg if kept current.

220550 2005-06-20 17:41:00 As there's a lot more to just throwing money at an AV system, I think considering the whole concept of AV is more important than any one part of it . There are compatability problems and some of the stuff "out there" is not happy in the same tower as SP-2 and other XP updates (2000 too, I didn't forget) .

I have been trying a lot of AV stuff for quite a while now, and so far, I have come up with a few that actually play well together and get along not harming each other .

First, I have M$'s AntiVirus Beta, as I believe that M$ should be responsible for patching their own holes, and using their program is a good bet .

The rest of them are as follows:
1) SpyBot S&D 1 . 4
2) SpywareBlaster
3) McAfee (because it's free from my ISP, otherwise I would not bother with it)
4) Microsoft's Baseline Security
5) AdAware (not AdWare!!!)
6) AVG Free
7) CrapCleaner
8) HighJackThis
9) Belarc Adviser
10 SpoofStick (IE & FireFox versions)

Thre are NO CONFLICTS at all with any of these . but I admit that AVG is very aggressive and slow . It has to be, as it seems to be the deepest-diver of the utilities .

One thing I keep on tap and call-able when I think I need it is ZoneAlarm . I had a few small problems with it locking me out of some sites, but I like it as it has that little indicator telling me what direction the traffic is going .

I like AVG, and tried Avast . But I feel I have more control over AVG than something that thinks around me (and around the corner too) .

I run behind a Linksys DSL Router for the dynamic ISP and firewalls it has .

Not running System Restore is another good thing too . If one has a full-install disk, then there's nothing about which to worry .

Getting all the updates from M$ and letting them have error reports too I feel is a very good idea . I found that once I let Dr . Watson report on things that go bump, I get a lot more service from M$ . I sometimes turn on or off the Windows Firewall . I just like to change horses once-in-a-while there .

It's just me probably, but I like the feel of being in control of my system and the AV stuff I have, so AVG is my personal choice .
(and I really like color too!)

220551 2005-06-20 22:15:00 Joe. Very good protection. However, I would still have a software firewall. This will stop an unknown software from launching and using a legimate protocol to send data back out.

You may also want to consider ProcessGuard (www.diamondcs.com.au) which stops all unapproved programs from running in their tracks. Even the free version does this.

It is not recommended to have two AV running at the same time.

Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

More than one can be installed but only have one active and running at the same time. As it is sometimes difficult to know what is active it is safer to only have one AV installed.
