220456 2004-03-06 09:50:00 I was reading the customs website and it mentions $700 nz need to be declared - under travelling. nomad (3693)
220457 2004-03-06 09:55:00 on further reading, gf would the camera come under tourist allowance? nomad (3693)
220458 2004-03-06 11:08:00 Having just returned from overseas I brought 4 cameras back 1 for myself & 1 each for my kids I carried them through customs my experience is that customs are not interested in cameras only illegal food & drugs.

220459 2004-03-06 16:23:00 drys, thats often the case, everything I have declared has usually been waived in this regard. If you don't declare it and its found, thats a different story as I have observed often.

Above comments also:
If you are a resident returning you are NOT a tourist, so no "tourist allowance" You are a tourist when you enter the other country.

The $700 threshhold is factual, and Customs take it into account. It always pays to declare it, and have supporting info as to cost.

IMHO Customs are more than reasonable with honest people.

I never get a release form for taking my laptop out of the country and back in, as they are not interested (try it and see). Recently travelled with a $25000 piece of equipment, and needed a Carney (type of international clearance) which was fun through several international countries. That was a different story. Close attention was paid.
