2004-03-06 04:53:00 | Hiya I am taking a ipod if I do get one, a laptop, film slr camera, 2 lenses, and other bits and pieces. For the earlier things, these can get declared and form be given to me from the customs office before I leave NZL. However, I intend to get a digital SLR from abroad, what should I do??? I don't want to be taxed .. even when that comes, it would still be lesser than what it cost here. Increidible.

2004-03-06 05:23:00 | I have travelled/do travel overseas frequently . All I can recommend is that you be honest with them on your return . Its never caused me a problem, and Customs have always acted very "kindly" in such matters, probably because of the honest declaration . If you try to evade GST or duty, and it is discovered, then it will be much more expensive that you can ever imagine . Your choice .

2004-03-06 06:19:00 | Could you possibly buy the camera duty free? Or would that exceed the limit. Don't cameras come under personal effects and it can't be charged tax?

How you bought it is largely irrelevant if you are bringing it into NZ when it was not purchased under our tax system here. Buying duty free is equivalent to buying it overseas. > Don't cameras come under personal effects and it > can't be charged tax? No. Its not personal clothing or jewellery.... |

2004-03-06 07:54:00 | So even if you pay tax on the item when overseas you have to pay more tax on it when you get back to NZ? Double taxage! | PoWa (203) | |
2004-03-06 09:03:00 | If you pay tax on them overseas, then thats your foolish action.. Where there is tax (UK have VAT for instance) you can recover it at the airport when you leave, if you did not buy it duty free in the UK. Sales tax in other countries can be harder to recover, so the moral is, dont buy it in that manner.

2004-03-06 09:07:00 | If you purchase overseas, you will be liable for GST on the item when you return. Thats only fair. NZ residents pay GST, and so should you. Luckily, cameras are free of duty, and if the GST amount is less than $50 they may not require payment.
