221262 2004-03-09 07:50:00 GRRR... 3 problems with my computer

1. i have a few older games from our old computer. 1 of them is roller coaster tycoon. whenever i play it it says "error trapper. exception error, acess violation. error location= unknown". WTF? I'm logged in as an administrator, tried patching, tried compatibility mode for windows 95 (worked in 95 on older computer) and installing on a FAT32 drive. DOESNT WORK. patching dosent work either...

2. why is dial-up so slow for me? bownloads rarely reach 2kB/s, they used to be 5-6kB/s. life isnt fair...

3. our computer is 9cm thick it's one of those ultra-thin ones (1 floppy drive space, 1 optical drive space, 1 h/d space). it's horizontal, and has a viewsonic 17" crt on top if it. every now and then it has bursts of clicks. what's going on?

221264 2004-03-09 11:01:00 1. Could be a myriad of things, DirectX conflicts spring to mind, not too sure though - not much of a gamer.

2. Could be a number of things, line noise, modem settings, etc etc etc etc. Best bet for that would be to give your ISP helpdesk a call, they should be able to reccomend some strings, alternative dial-up numbers etc which may help the problem.

3. What clicks? The monitor or the computer?

221266 2004-03-10 20:55:00 Nasty clicking noisies generally are the sound of impending doom for the hard drive.

be careful, maybe a backup would be prudent.

221267 2004-03-11 03:22:00 the noise stopped now. i took teh computer, and put it beside teh screen, not under it. still a mystery... :D

oh and i'm downloading and installing directX9.0b. i'll tell you how it goes (to be honest, i dont think i even had direct X at all :p)

221268 2004-03-11 03:47:00 with the comp clicking noises maybe the case wasnt quite stong enough and the weight of ur screen was pushing down on something it shouldnt have been @_@ robert6655 (5176)
221269 2004-03-11 08:10:00 With Rollercoaster Tycoon, I think there is a patch that fixes the XP issues, or you could get the expansion which I hear fixes it.
You could try: www.rollercoastertycoon.com

or

www.rct2.com

221270 2004-03-11 08:11:00 ah, I just saw that you said patching doesnt work. What happens when you try to patch? Or did you mean, patching doesn't fix it? Wilky (776)

Don't forget there are stacks of other ISP's who offer JetStream, alot of them with much better plans than Xtra.
