221677 2004-03-11 07:02:00 Thanks Pheonix.

I'll remember that - and breathe a little easier for the moment.

(Remembered this time to spell your name the way you do. Old habits on mythological spellings die hard when taught by classical sticklers, as I was)

221678 2004-03-11 07:11:00 Dont assume that the file that tells it you have previously tried the software will be indentifiable as belonging to the Solitaire program - it won't .

That would make what you want to do all too easy, for everyone else as well .

Basically there should be no identity that tracks back to PGS so no way to determine what the file or registry entry is, and where it is . . . . . if the software writer has done his job properly .

Try this one here:
. 123freesolitaire . com/download_solitaire . htm" target="_blank">www . 123freesolitaire . com
Only use the first one on the list (scroll to the bottom of the page to select the download) and its totally free . It might want to update a small ad from time to time, but its well mannered and asks nicely, from memory .

221679 2004-03-11 20:19:00 Hi Godfather,
As usual you speak with wisdom- I know I am being tightfisted, and I will try the program you mentioned.
I sent a e mail to PGS and a Thomas Warfield at least had the courtesy to reply- so many don't.
He also ignored the fact that this was a secondhand h/d and did not address the question very well- "I should re apply for the registration on ordering"- Ha ! I told him I would not spend money on a free offer of 30 days trial , in case I did not like it.
Bloody minded- on my part? Probably! :-)
We'll see what eventuates.
By the way my query on why "that game(chess)" would not open predictably- it is now opening everytime- for how long I don't know- and goodness knows what I finally did to even get this far
Thanks again G F

221680 2004-03-11 20:37:00 Presuming the software company didnt cover their tracks then the offending reg key will probably be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE then the name of the company who makes the software then the game. parry (27)
221681 2004-03-11 21:51:00 Thats not all either . GF is right, there are many methods and one that I have found, was where they dropped a file into the windows directory . When the program is installed, it looks for this file, which is time stamped . Trouble was, it had a name that was not related to the maker or the program .

There is a program that monitors the install process, noting which keys are added/changed in the registry and what files are added/modified . The only catch is , that the program will only do it correctly on a new install .

I guess some things you will just have to live with . :)

Oh Eddie, you should have whispered that and then knocked on wood!! :O
Glad to hear that it is behaving now - was wondering how you were getting on with it. :-)
*Keeps fingers crossed that it stays that way*

221683 2004-03-11 22:35:00 Hi Susan B
- I did , I did- I knocked my head ( solid wood,
:-)---against a concrete wall --in exasperation -
and! and! I have done about 27 "thatgame(chess)" moves this morning and it is still going.perfeckly ;-) Grrrrhhhhh!
But
'Tis great to be so unemployed as a superuanuitant ( lovely big word that)- I should have done this from the very begining-well over 70 years ago- when, they did NOT have putas, and life was so much simpler.

221684 2004-03-11 23:12:00 There is one sure-fire solution effie, but it will cost you more than the program unfortunately.

You can do a full reformat & reinstall, then image your hard drive prior to installing your time limited software. When the trial expires, rewrite your HDD and start again. It might even work if you image it immediately after you load the game, but that will depend on how it counts the days.

It's a lot of trouble to go to to avoid paying a pittance for a game you obviously enjoy very much though, and I would have thought it was worth paying for that reason alone.:|

221685 2004-03-12 00:02:00 Now now Billy, every penny counts for most of our superannuitants . $US30 might be affordable for you and I but maybe not for Eddie . :-(

Why don't you get your sprogs (aka children :p) to chip and and buy the program for your birthday, Eddie? :-)

Regarding Billy's suggestion re formatting the hard drive, I was going to suggest that but you would then have the cost of purchasing the drive image software which is probably four times the cost of the game . . . . .

Oh, and your head isn't wooden! :D

Sorry Sis :8}

I'll try to make it up to effie, honest I will. :_|

I guess there must be something special about that version of Solitaire effie, but at This site (www.geocities.com) you will find 90 other versions of Solitaire. The compilation is aptly named Solitude, and they are all free.:)

If ordinary Solitaire is not be providing the same old thrill, try Cruel, a beastlier form of Solitaire. Those whom it does not drive insane, come out stronger, and so level-headed they can dribble out of both sides of their mouth at the same time.

I originally posed the URL on This Thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) if you feel like a little light entertainment.

Cheers
