221559 2004-03-10 09:24:00 tweak'e, im a kid, naive, no idea what im doing, i wont charge if im concerned about people not buying off me in the first place. but this isn't about how horrible we run our business, it's about recommendations for a computer that would suit the needs of the author of the first post.

but, typically, I'm tired, but I'll most certainly be back sometime to give these recommendations!

221560 2004-03-10 09:32:00 not tryign to hijack here but .......I gotta say your rates are .....ridiculously low.........if all you are chargin is $20 to fix a puter then well....either you are amazingly efficient and manage to fix em VERY fast or ?.......well I dunno......but $20 per hour maybe would be more likely......even then it's WAY below the average callout fee.....

puter reccomendations

decent 800FSB mobo
128Mb vid card
P4 2.4
512 Mb ram
60Gb hdd min

all for under $1000

not trying to put you down her (its good to see more people makeing a go of it) however if people want to buy off a naive kid who dosn't know what there doing.......its up to them. sorry but they come and go so often its not funny.

anyway back on topic.....

the 2 main choices are either a supermarkrt pc or custom built.

supermarket pc's eg dell/compaq are ok if your not planing to ever update. once it won't do what you want it to do, throw it out and buy a new one. drawbacks are proprietry hardware and restore disk which are often locked to the hardware.

general rule of thumb is custom built pc's are better but dearer. you can specifiy exactly what you want.
ready made custom builts (eg mom and pop stores) can be a real mix, some good some horrid.

personally i wouldn't touch an elcheapo custom built with a 20ft barge pole. put it this way, you make more fixing it than making it ;-)

221562 2004-03-10 09:49:00 hey, maybe we've nothing better to do and appreciate anything...

Hmm those recommendations are somewhat excessive for the task at hand.

800 FSB Mobo? Why not go AMD? ~$200

128 MB Vd card? For what - word? But i can understand that to some extent. maybe not a flash 128, something like a GeForce MX 440 ~$110

P4 2.4.... hmmm I suggest AMD. But then again, considering the budget the Intel decision is warranted. ~$290

I agree with the 512 MB, and though 1024 MB may sound excessive, It may help if you plan on running many things at once. ~$240

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum Ex for sound ~$440

And for all those sound and all those files, you want a good 120 GB ~$170

all about that's about: $1450

221563 2004-03-10 09:51:00 Now now, I do know what I'm doing, i just don't what to charge. Let's not get to nasty here... I hope you find my above post useful. Growly (6)
221564 2004-03-10 10:03:00 Wait, oh dear. Sorry, mistake on my part of the communication.

Anyway continuing my post:

That pretty much being the guts, you'll also need (any of the following):

CD RW ~$65
DVD ROM ~$65
Floppy (maybe not even a floppy - but i recommend it) ~$25
Case ~$99

O/S (the big one) ~$150 - $300. You probably want Windows XP Home or pro... my suggestion.

Screen ~$200
Keyboard mouse etc... You can get packs with the kybd, mouse and case (with speakers too) for about $95. These aren't the best of everything, but they do the job. For the better versions, about $30 for mouse and $30 for keyboard.

Speakers: $100 - good pair

Modem ? ~$15 (winmoden)

now, without any extra software, this lot brings it to about another $830 with the majority of the above stuff.

Meaning the grand total is still less than your budget, at around $2280 give or take $100 for shipping.

But that's if you get it custom built. Now I see nothing wrong with these, as I've built two or three, all work perfectly, and i use one all day everyday. The same stuff (with some fancy extras) will cost you about $3000 from a "supermaket" pc supplier. Then again, I haven't been there in a while, so I'm not too sure. The other thing these "supermarket" pcs give you are optional extras, such as printers scanners.

That's pretty much it for me, what does everyone else have to say?

221565 2004-03-10 11:58:00 Just have a browse around http://www . ascent . co . nz and try making up a custom build of your own .

Take good note of the specifications and features for each model and do a little research of your own . That company is possibly one of the best and has very good service nd most online ones can assemble it for you and give you free shipping . Of course you can mix n match parts you've obtained from cheaper stores .

Stay away from the supermarket pcs as you end up paying for the brand name and you don't get as good a deal as possible .

If you've got a lot of money spare afterwards buy something nice for the front end . A nice crystal clear LCD is what you want .

> My main priorities are good sound system, Monitor must be at least 19" or 17" if a flat one .

A 17" lcd is equivalent to a 19" crt and so forth, but check for things like dead pixel policy issues and so on . An lcd also might not provide the smoothest dvd viewing or quite the correct colours if your a graphic designer . Sony's flat screen CRT's are still the best in that area as they use aperture grill technology .

If your wanting true quality sound you get the sound card outside the pc away from the interference . That said the cards in the pc are still good but not as good as the ones outside .

221566 2004-03-10 18:10:00 To give you a benchmark on price and stats here is a basic to middle machine I sell at our shop (retravision) from Arche Technologies.
$1499.95
AMD athlon 2500xp
256Mb DDR ram
80Gb 7200rpm Hard Drive
DVD/CDRW combo
windows XP Home
Windows digital media edition
3x games
17 AOC crt monitor
S200 canon printer and usb cable
12 month sub PC Cillen

and all the usuals like mouse etc.

That will help to give you an idea of what you can get etc. Perhaps you have some idea of what you do or don't want in a system??
Did you want all the extra bits like printers etc?
Is your budget flexible ??
Will you use a super machine to its fullest extent?? Online gaming etc or could you use something slightly lower spec'd and save some $$??

Even tho I'm having a bit of a problem over a motherboard with them at the moment, I have bought several PCs from them on behalf of others and they have good quality systems at great prices and the service is second to none.
IMO
No, I have no business connection with them whatsoever
