221339 2004-03-09 18:48:00 Hi guys...

Yet another Linux query... I was just wanting to know are there any Linux distro's out there which have MP3 support straight out of the box so to speak... preferebly NON RED HAT distro's.

I've tried Redhat 8,9 & Fedora.

I'm still having problems with my sound card (search for my previous Fedora post for more info). I've been reading FAQ's and Googling, but the closest I can figure is a conflict between my onboard sound chip and my PCI SB Live! 5.1 card.

For now just the distro's info will be great... I might just re-install and start from scratch.

cheers

221340 2004-03-09 20:08:00 Try Ark Linux.

Its still not a final release, but its nothing short of brilliant :-)

It has support for both your AC '97 and SB!Live. Make sure your AC '97 is disabled in the BIOS and that its not trying to assign an IRQ to it.

Its a major turn-off when there's not much installed out-of-the-box in the way of multimedia.......
Ark Linux has two problems Im aware of:
Rosegarden is crashing (A Midi synthesizer)
Kaffeini segfaults on exit (A Xine front-end).

No fear though, there's still kmplayer, kaboodle, noatun, xine, xmms, juk.... The list goes on of Multimedia players installed. Pick one that suits your tastes :-)

Hope this helps

221341 2004-03-10 00:20:00 If you've got problems with hardware "collisions", other distributions are likely not to help. :D Linux is Linux.

I've been using RH since 4.2, and have always found it reliable and easy to use.

RHx comes without MP3 capability. RH have avoided the likelihood of being sued for licence fees if they put it into downloadable ISO images. I install an RPM of xmms and I can play MP3. No problems. ;-)

221342 2004-03-10 00:45:00 True, but then ONLY xmms can play mp3's, and only mp3's at that! Chilling_Silently (228)
221343 2004-03-10 01:03:00 " . . . only xmms can play . . . "? Load another player and it can play MP3s too . xmms also does WAV, MOD, MID . . . and there are other plugins .

But no player will work if there are hardware conflicts . Fix that . Trying diffferent distributions in the hope that that will fix the hardware is not likely to yield "good OOTB" experiences .

By that I mean that only xmms can play MP3's. That's all fine and dandy, but it cant play AVI files. That would involve installing another few rpm's...
Then if you want a Media Player that'll play .mov files, you're screwed for choice too....
What about WMV's?
Last time I used Redhat 9, it didnt even come with mpg123 :p

True.... :-)

Unless they have better hardware support, but lets not go there :p

221345 2004-03-10 01:57:00 AFAIK redhat is the only distro to leave out mp3 support.

Trying another distro may actually help with the sound because the problem is probably not with the drivers but how the card(s) are being detected and set up.

I use mandrake, but even knoppix might be worth a try to see if it can set it up because it uses a completely different detection thingy to mdk & redhat.
