221942 2004-03-12 10:37:00 I am going to buy some new 7.1 PC speakers but cannont seem to find out if they will be compatible with my current sound card.
How can I find out if it is?

221943 2004-03-12 10:40:00 Hi Ollie

Welcome to PF1

Post the details of your sound card and proposed speakers (brands and model numbers), and then we will be better able to advise you.

Cheers

221944 2004-03-12 10:48:00 Hi Ollie123

copy and paste this into your web browser

www.google.co.nz

I think as long as you have 5.1 you should be able to run 7.1

221945 2004-03-12 10:51:00 Hi

The speakers are AVLABS 7.1 125w RMS Mulitmedia Speaker Set.

The sound card is VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio (WAVE).
I got the sound card info from the DirectX Diagnostic Tool Display.

I'm not too sure if that was the right place to get the sound card info.

Thanks anyway.

221946 2004-03-12 10:59:00 VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio is a "codec" not a "sound card" .

It looks like "on board sound" though, and not a dedicated sound card .

You may have to look at the motherboard manual to determine the full capabilities, as the sound will be integrated into the motherboard chipset .

221948 2004-03-16 08:18:00 Hey People,

Anybody have any reccomendations for surround sound speakers, (preferably 6.1 or 7.1).
I will buy a soundcard to match them.

Thanks, Ollie123

221949 2004-03-16 08:28:00 Hi Ollie, I would go with the Sound Blaster Audigy I or II but if you really want something that kicks butt, the Sound Blaster Audigy ZS is a really reat buy as well. Get a set of Creative Cambridge Works Speakers 7.1 and you'll be set for a while as far as sound is concerned.

:)

cheers

221950 2004-03-16 08:33:00 Havent looked into it properly but im pretty sure the audigy,audigy2 range is 5.1, i think the latest release may have a 6.1 variant.Even if they are available they will be few and far between.I know of no creative model that has 7.1.

Then of course you hit the fact that nothing is encoded in 7.1,and ive yet to see anything in 6.1.

Whats the point?

Just go 5.1,its cheaper, easier to source, and is actually suported/encoded for.

221951 2004-03-19 11:07:00 Hi,

I,ve decided to get the "Creative Inspire T7700 7.1 Speaker System."
My only problem is the sound card,- I should get the card to match the speakers but it costs around $500 new.
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro.
I'll go to the computer shop tomorrow to see if I can get anything cheaper??
