221887 2004-03-12 04:17:00 Hi Team

I need to do some basic electrical & electronic draughting and need a source for symbols for lamps, motors, resistors, relays and all that kind of stuff.

It doesn't warrant investment in CAD, I just want to drop images into Publisher or plug them together in Paint etc. I searched in Google but found only expensive downloads or warez cracks for expensive downloads and I don't want to go there!

Any ideas?

Cheers

It has a schematic componet that will allow you to draw diagrams.

Best of all you can output as a jpeg.

221889 2004-03-12 05:19:00 Hi Billy,
try www.cadsym.com
or if this doesn't suit, search google for "IEC 617", which is the IEC standard for electrical drawing symbols.

I'll post again when I've done it.

221891 2004-03-12 05:40:00 Thanks.

I've searched for a couple of hours but all I have found is tiny 2k files that pixilate like mad when increased to usable size. I found a promising looking file but the suffix was hqx (Mac compression?) Winzip turned it into a sit file (stuffit?) but I got nowhere after that so I deep-sixed it.

Cheers

221892 2004-03-12 08:44:00 Dia (www.lysator.liu.se) might be able to do what you want. I've mainly used it for UML & logic stuff, but it does come with a set of circuit symbols (homepages.paradise.net.nz).

You could either do the complete circuit in dia, or export each of the symbols to use in publisher (it supports both vector formats and PNG etc). From my experience doing UML, getting everything to line up will be very frustrating in publisher, esp. if you need to move something.

221893 2004-03-12 09:10:00 MS Visio has a good collection of electrical and electronic symbols. bk T (215)

If you really want these you can use Stuffit Expander

Hmm..... Thanks, never heard of MS Visio before.

Is it free, and if so, where do I get it?

The need does not justify any expenditure unfortunately as usage would be very low and no chance of cost recovery.

Cheers

221896 2004-03-12 20:59:00 Visio starts at $499.

Its not free, as its part of the "Office" range of programs but not included with any versions of Office. Its an add-on.

I use it, and its probably the best in the field. It comes in several flavours, you probably need Visio Technical to get the full range of templates.

Not sure why Bkt recommended it, as you were clear that high cost was not warranted. Visio is high cost.
