221845 2004-03-11 22:14:00 I have tried to set up speech recognition and have been able to get the tool bar running but there are no options accessible for training etc, they are all greyed out. When I go to control panel>>speech and try to set it up from there I get the dialog box "there is no engine for this function, please select another audio device" or something like that, I am at work and don't have the message in front of me.

Can anyone help me?

I am using windows xp, office xp and have a creative soundblaster sound card. I tested the microphone with creative's recorder and it is working.

Also, I tried reinstalling the speech function from the office xp installation cd but to no avail.

221846 2004-03-11 22:33:00 There is no speech engine in XP, but it can be installed. Go here for an explanation:

221847 2004-03-12 07:28:00 Goddie. Is the speech recognition in XP Home? Is it T to S, or S to T, or both?. Did trial a couple of "Bought" programmes a year ago & was not impressed. If such a programme was installed, would it recognise both mine & Maryann's voices?? PJ Poppa John (284)
221848 2004-03-12 09:26:00 PJ, there's not a speech engine ever made that could cope with your accent!

There is no speech engine in XP. You need to read the article in the link above.

After installing the downloads, you should get some degree of T to S in some applications.

Its NOT S to T.

MS Office XP has support for S to T but I have never used it, never likely to.

I use MS Agent etc to give T to S on incoming email headers (its supported in Eudora) as I get many incoming emails each day, and keep Eudora minimised but still know who the email is from.

S to T requires hours of training for each person, to get the application (such as Dragon etc) to respond to each individual voice. Really not worth it unless you are unable to use a keyboard or are just plain bored in my opinion.

221849 2004-03-12 09:34:00 Just read the original post again, and Office XP is mentioned . That should support what you are doing .

Check what language is selected, it may need to be English US?

221851 2004-03-13 02:27:00 Goddie ... You are a cheeky be(u)gger, You'll keep !!!! My accent is now very NZ having been here since 1964, with very little Yorkshire in it, so there.
Did look at downloadig the speech recognition components as in your post. Item 1 would take 4+ hrs on a 56 modem, there are 5 itrms. Will ring/email MS Auckland, Monday, to see if they have the disc advertised. PJ

221852 2004-03-13 07:50:00 Has anybody downloaded "Microsoft Agent" set of components for speech recognition? What Freeware speech program did you use with it, if any, on XP Home? PJ Poppa John (284)
221853 2004-03-13 08:25:00 PJ, just to be clear . MS Agent is not speech recognition .

Its Text to Speech, where the text in Windows is read out to you . Its not the other way round . . . . . I use the L&H software with it .

MS Office XP has the speech recognition (Speech to Text) ability, but its far from perfect in my experience .

221854 2004-03-13 08:45:00 Goddie. I hear what you are saying re your paras 1 & 2.
If I had Office XP I would probably persevered with it (accent permiting!!). Have spent a couple of hours stumbling thro" Google & Ask Jeeves. It seems that all the best stuff "Costs $$", which is fair enough. There was a mention of Microsoft Freeware on Geocities, but could not make much sense of it. I have forgotten what it like to have a woking brain!!!! PJ
