221723 2004-03-11 21:06:00 As Godfather and Laura say, Peer to Peer is where your computer looks into another persons computer and chooses information to copy off that other person's machine. Usually music and also usually in breach of copyright. Kazza for instance has more than 500 million files (tunes) available from millions of different computers around the world.

Other people can also look into your computer and copy files - but only those you put in your "Shared" folder.

The point of Peer to Peer is that there isn't one big machine somewhere on the globe holding and controlling all this data. It is contained in bits and pieces on ordinary folks computers. It is a true users network.

By contrast, when you surf the Net, almost everything you find is contained on a server - a master computer run by an ISP or university or enthusiast. They have control of that machine. If something illegal is on the site, Court orders can be obtained and the server ordered to remove it. Of course this isn't a lot of use to a defamed Kiwi if the server is in Thailand or Mongolia.

P2P software such as Kazza Lite, is a program which allows you to look around the world for someone elses computer with the song or file you want. It could be your neighbour but you won't know that. However it certainly will not be an Xtra, or Yahoo server that the tune is on.

Simple to use and there are legally downloadable tunes so it isn't complete anarchy.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Winston

That was the beauty of the NZ DC Hubs, many of which have either closed, or are now overloaded....

221726 2004-03-11 23:17:00 yeah thts the curse of a hub type system comapred to a P2P system. you rely on the hubs and are at the mercy of the hubs admin. tweak'e (174)

Actually you had it more correct than you thought, because it basically means the same thing... one "entity" directly connecting to another "entity"

It's probably a good idea to remind P2P users that the above is not always true... it's possible to exploit flaws in some P2P apps that allow access to all files and folders in a Windows (sigh alas Windows again) system, unless some preventative action is taken, eg making your uploads folder a non standard folder in an undistinct directory.

How do you do that Greg?

221730 2004-03-12 01:07:00 It's in the "settings". I can't say for all P2P apps, but Kazaa Lite allows you to specify where your shareable files are stored, and where remote users are able to access them from. I am sure that most P2P apps will have similar options.

So, in Windows Explorer, create a directory called "whatever" and then inside that make a folder called "uploads" or something. Then in the App's settings (eg in Kazza Lite it's Options, Kazaa Lite options) you specify which folder you wish to share your contents with. Anything inside this folder will be available to be taken by remote users while you run KL.

In my case I have an entire seperate hard-drive partition for my downloads, and my shared folder is on this, and nothing else is contained within this partition. Actually I don't give away anything anyway... all I have to share is a 1kb text file called "text" which gives me at least a nominal share priority.

Remember to only get and give non copyrighted material, as I do.

Hope that all makes sense?

221731 2004-03-12 01:08:00 ps... also there are upgrades to most programmes, inluding P2P software, that plug the security holes that used to be targetted. Greg S (201)
