222279 2004-03-13 09:08:00 We need a new VCR - we've had a look at Farmers and Harvey Norman etc. and discovered you can't buy black VCRs anymore.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find one? Having a gray/silver VCR just wouldn't look right.

Any suggestions (apart from the quite unhelpful suggestion we received from the chap at Harvey Norman - "buy some spray-paint")?

222280 2004-03-13 10:00:00 one solution could be a new tv?? other option is cheaper but not as cheap as spray paint- trademe, im sure you will be able to find a pretty good one on there, remembering that black vcrs are a while back now.

222281 2004-03-13 10:08:00 I think the most recent black VCR was the Mitsubishi "Black Diamond" range, which they persisted with for quite a while after the silver fad came back. Originally all VCRs were silver though the first of the Panasonics (8400??) featured wood-grain! That was when a single 1 hour VHS videotape cost around $90 in today's money.

Buying black new would be very difficult so a used model might be the only option.

222282 2004-03-13 10:55:00 Well spray paint wouldn't be too bad :) Just get some of that new 3M masking tape and tape over the bits you dont want turning black. If you do it right you can make a good job :p

Then again you might start spraying electronic components and corroding them.

Have you tried noel leeming or bond n bond? They can't order you a colour you want?

222283 2004-03-13 21:51:00 Sadly black video recorders are a thing of the past. Most manufacturers are dropping video recorders totally or plan to do so within the next year so I can't see them changing their production line for a product that will no longer viable.
Also be aware the "black diamond" videos you see in shops these days have NO relation to the Mitsubishi Black Diamond series of VCR's of old.
Mitsubishi sold the name rights.

Uh, how would a new TV help? ?:|

A friend of mine bought a black Sony (I think it was Sony) VCR only about 12-18 months ago, of a model that is still available (but in silver only), so they can't be that long gone, can they?

How would buying a black TV solve the problem of not being able to buy a black VCR ?:|

Colour compatibility is the issue. We have a new (less than 6 months old) component hifi system... it's black. It would look better if the VCR would match it, by being the same colour. It seems a bit stupid that you can buy black home theatre systems, but can't buy VCRs to go with them.

222287 2004-03-14 03:16:00 go to a pawn shop that ( usually ) is also a seccond hand dealers.

I can think of three places here in christchurch that sell black VCRs.

But it is true that you can't buy 'em new anymore ( black ones ) so much for consumer electronic fashion statements huh? :D

222288 2004-03-15 06:16:00 The thing that gets me is that they are starting to make/sell more black DVD players as consumers want them to match their black component stereo systems... so why not make black VCRs for the same reason?
