222180 2004-03-13 02:45:00 For the last 3 months or so I have had trouble with windows update.
I click on update.
Window starts checking for the latest version of windows update.
I then click on "check for updates" and a message comes up
"Windows update error. Windows update has encountered an error and can not display the requested page. The windows update servers are temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."
I understand that the windows update service has been down at times, but not for 3 months surely.
Any help would be welcome.

222181 2004-03-13 03:05:00 Try posting the Entire Error message here, IIRC it has the option somewhere to show you the whole message.

Chill.

I will check the update address I am using.

Thanks

222188 2004-03-14 19:10:00 I have Win98SE also & haven't had any problems with the update site.

Peter H's link doesn't work for me, however. But Tommy's picks up the site easily. Try that, if you haven't already?

The last updates I've had were:

4 February - Cumulative Security Update (KB832894)
5 December - Root Certificates Update
13 November - Cumulative Security Update (KB824145)
5 October - Cumulative Patch (KB828751)

If you were up to date 3 months ago, it appears you may have missed only the most recent one.

222189 2004-03-14 22:47:00 I had this problem briefly and found my way to an instruction to use the URL as follows:

https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

For some reason after installing a Microsoft update it became nececcary to access the secure server. Now the plain old http:// works again!
Give it a try, no harm in it.
