222828 2004-03-15 11:12:00 Hey guys...

I wanna give my mum a gift, and I thought I'd buy a stylie stereo from somewhere, rip it open and lop in a hard drive (off trademe) so she can play MP3's on it ~ just to give it that personal feel, y'know?

My question is, how would I make the system play MP3's?

I have seen a pc mod once where they used winamp to play songs. But is this the only way and how does it work?

I have the basic idea for hooking it up to the stereo and cold fusion has the soldering expertise so yeah.

Cheers

222829 2004-03-15 11:27:00 I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I doubt it's going to be that simple....

Personally I'd say there's a LOT more involved than the basic outline you've just detailed.

If Im wrong, let me know, I'd be interested to hear how it turns out :-)

Chill.

222830 2004-03-15 12:09:00 The easiest and cheapest thing I can think of would be to use a cheap DVD player that has mp3 playback. It would have a remote and should be usable without the TV (my mustek is).

If you wanted, you should be able to rip it open and mount the parts in something else.

222831 2004-03-15 22:00:00 Perhaps custom burnt CD's would be the easiest solution.

Alternatively a hardware MP3 player like some of the new car stereos, DVD player (as mentioned previously) or a portable MP3 player wired into the external inputs on the stereo would get around it.

A custom MP3 player unit that is controllable takes a lot of work to produce, I know one person who has done a cut down Linux box w/ Firewire drive, LCD Panel and controls in dash and a wireless link for uploading songs to his car... it's very nice but a hell of a lot of work and $$ involved.

222832 2004-03-16 02:11:00 I agree, some people go to extreme effort to produce their own mp3 player
Just use.rip apart a cheapie DVD that can do CDrws and i dont reccomend ripping electronics apart,it doesnt always work afterwards :P

silicon chip australia had an article on how to do it,it ends up costing about twice as much as a cheap dvd

222833 2004-03-16 02:18:00 I'm with bmason - just get hold of a reasonable quality player and plug that in. Sure beats ripping open the stereo. There are lots of player models available, and not very expensive either. Let us know how you get on. :-) PressF1 User (1065)
222834 2004-03-16 10:07:00 yeah, but theres a few things i forgot about...

1. I need a processor and memory to use winamp, which means i would need a SFF mobo or daughterboard ($$$)

2. how would I control it? Most stereos these days, the buttons are soldered straight into the PCB.

And I want it to sit on top of the microwave in the kitchen... a DVD players hardly going to look in place up there.

ahhhh, it was a stupid idea anyway...
