222876 2004-03-16 03:45:00 Hey troops,

Just a general question about fussy files. I recently moved a .rar file across my home network and had a network glitch moments 'after' it came across (glitch as in the pc networking from was suddenly no longer available..don't know how this happened as the other pc was right net to it).

For some reason the file sat on my desktop fully accesable to uncompress, but I was unable to delete it. I tried numerous techiques such safe mode, ending process's in the task list right through to transfering it across the the network again (which oddly enough as it was the same file allowed me to overwrite it). all to no avail when selecting delete (the message would indicate the file was in use/being used by another person).

Even ran Nortom 04 & Spybot all coming up clear. End result I took the HDD out and put it in my other PC and manually deleted....this actually worked.

I just wanted to know if there was an easier method, rather the the manual result I ended up having to do.

Cheers,

Tekboi

222877 2004-03-16 04:15:00 I would suggest running a Scandisk first off.

If your Hard Drive uses Fat32, then use a Boot Floppy.

If it uses NTFS, then use Knoppix :-)

Chill.

222878 2004-03-16 04:23:00 It might have been still "open" to the network transfer process, which was still waiting for the rest of the file to come. :D Just one of those things. :O Graham L (2)
222879 2004-03-16 04:25:00 the other trick i often use is to move the file to anouther folder then delete that folder. tweak'e (174)
222880 2004-03-16 05:03:00 I'd tried the scan disk a few time also never seen that prog for NTFS, might have to chase that down. thanks.

Yeah I'd re-transferred over the network and it was able to overwrite the file (oddly enough) but still wouldn't let me delete it.

Funnily enough tweak'e after all the messing around I did, I never tried moving it to another folder, and I'd done that in the past. just never though of it this time.

Thanks troops for your ideas.

222881 2004-03-16 06:40:00 I like the old erase command from the command promt. Works every time. PoWa (203)
