222739 2004-03-15 21:20:00 Morning all.
Can someone kind person tell me how to get rid of the screen that appears between the WinXP start-up and my being able to actually see my desktop. It says something like "welcome blah blah blah - please click on username to start" - I can't recall that exact words. It's a mostly blue screen with a box containing my partner's name and some small graphic element. Anyhow I want to bypass all that garbage. Thanks in anticipation. :)

222740 2004-03-15 21:27:00 Go to Control Panel, User Accounts, Change the way users log on or off, and remove tick from Use Welcome Screen. tommy (2826)
222741 2004-03-15 21:34:00 Unfortunately that solution does not allow you to boot straight to the desktop instead of logging on. You need to download TweakUI, part of Microsoft PowerToys available from www.siliconvalley.com
Install the program, open TweakUI and select the "Logon" item from the task list.
To bypass the Welcome screen go to AutoLogon and tick the box that permits Windows XP to take you directly to your Desktop.

222743 2004-03-15 22:51:00 Hi Tommy
When I click on the TweakUI.exe link I get "You are not authorised to view this page". Is that something to do with my security settings? I also tried it with the ImageResize.exe file and got the same result. You might have guessed I'm not a particularly technically-enabled individual...

222744 2004-03-15 23:33:00 It could be your settings as I can save both of those files to my hard drive myself. Windows XP PowerToys is normally on the PC World CD if you have a recent copy available, otherwise try downloading from this site (www.pcworld.com). tommy (2826)

The link worked fine. However, I can't download anything from that site. Security settings on my PC, I suspect. Anyhoo, I got the fix from the PCW CD as suggested by Tommy and it worked fine. Ta very much.
