223020 2004-03-17 00:51:00 Hi people,

A wee query on a canoscan N640P ex scanner.

Installed the software and when tring to start it an error message pops up "CanoCraft CS-P3.8 other error 0x10ff0800"

The scanner seems to want to work, its light comes on and something tries to move on the inside and comes to an abrupt halt.
Also the white ribbon/wire is also slightly twisted, as in bent up along three quarters its length.

This is happening on a friends computer and is brand new 3 day old scanner.

Running Windows 98 SE.

cheers merlin-nz ;-)

223021 2004-03-17 01:04:00 Have a good look under/on top/at back ... for anything which might be a "transport lock" (open/closed padlock symbols?). Such things seem less common these days, but when the carriage is locked, scanners don't scan. ;-)

Normally straight things are straight : was it straight on the first day? If not, I'd talk to the shop about it --- guarantees are for that. :D

223022 2004-03-17 01:04:00 I hope I'm not stating the obvious, but have you checked the carriage lock switch underneath the machine? Alasta (1420)
223023 2004-03-17 02:33:00 Hi guys,

No you are not stating the obvious the first thing I thought of was the lock, but no that was unlocked.

Friend has since informed me she has taken it back for replacement/refund.
The guy never seemed interested in helping her from the start, so I suggested she get a refund and tell the guy that sold it to here to stick it where the sun don't shine. ]:)

cheers merlin-nz ;-)

223024 2004-03-17 02:36:00 I have also found with Canon products, follow the instructions exactly on installation procedures.

223025 2004-03-17 22:55:00 Another thing with canon Parallel Port scanners is to ensure the EPP/ECP settings in BIOS are correct. Sorry I can never remember the right way round for them but that also solves a myriad of problems with Canon Scanners dipstick01 (445)

While some shops operate a "no questions asked" returns policy, your friend can't just expect a refund if they test the scanner and it works OK for them. Refunds do not even apply if the product is faulty, provided the seller will replace it or get it repaired within a reasonable time.

For that reason, telling the shop to stick it may not engender a high level of service response. In all product disputes, scrupulous politeness and patient persistence are the keys to success.

Taking the opposite path is likely end up with th other party telling you to get knotted and they will repair/replace but not refund.

Cheers
