222945 2004-03-16 09:26:00 the offical answer is......
Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that are run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services portion of the registry to construct a list of services that it needs to load. There can be multiple instances of Svchost.exe running at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This allows for better control and debugging.

what's that all mean? I hear you ask

basicly its part of windows and needs to be there, you might have as many a 5 copies of it running at one time it ok.
just let it do its thing and it will do the same for you :-)

222947 2004-03-16 10:08:00 If you connect up a personal firewall, you'll notice this program trying to connect to the net. You'll also notice that if you block it, you won't be able to use the net at all.

I think its kind-of dodgy. I might end up looking into it a bit more one day, start monitoring the connections it makes, analysing the packets it sends and tracing the connections. Might uncover some interesting conspiracy. ]:)
