1336388 2013-04-11 02:52:00 Really? This year so far has been the busiest we've ever been, in service work and sales of new computers and laptops.
Granted not many of those sales have included Windows 8 with about 90% of people opting to stay with Windows 7.
Those that did get Windows 8 really like it though and they don't all have a touchscreen.

1336389 2013-04-11 02:58:00 im not surprised, but the sales of tablets must have increased a lot especially with all the competition with them like the nexus etc Gobe1 (6290)
1336390 2013-04-11 02:59:00 I'm sick of people pinning the win8/pc decline as a "fail" might not have notices but smartphone sales have bloody quickly outstripped PC sales, and tablet sales are catching up. We moved on, the PC isn't dead, but people are now happy to sit for 3-4 years on a PC and update their phone/tablet every 1-2 years instead of the other way around. Previously your PC was always new and up to date and your phone came 2nd.

Windows 8 is not a flop, PC's are not exactly dying but tablets and smartphones are taking off. Viva la revolution.

1336391 2013-04-11 03:33:00 Error guys post is spot on. To counter the link saying windows 8 is the cause ( which is a load of BS) heres an article from April 2012, when Windows 8 wasn't out yet, and Windows 7 was the "bees Knees" kind of blows the W8 theory right out the window. So to speak.

1336392 2013-04-11 03:51:00 I think the big screen of the PC will keep me in the said machine. Cicero (40)
1336393 2013-04-11 04:14:00 I agree with Cicero. I always know where my PC is, and I don't have the continual hassle of wondering whether is is charged up or not. My Kindle charge lasts for weeks, but I have never known a phone or tablet to even approach that. Richard (739)
1336394 2013-04-11 04:57:00 Here's something thing to note.

Over the last 5 years, a great deal of people were buying a PC for the first time. Before this it used to be a family owning a PC, in the last 5 years it has become more and more about individual machines.
People don't need to upgrade every year or every two years now.
My parents, girlfriend and most people I know have been through 1 PC each in the last 5 years, I've been through 3 myself.

For most people an Intel Core2Duo from 5 years ago is pretty much than enough. There isn't as much to gain from getting a current i5 if all you do is browse the web or use Office.

My point is we have hit a plateau, not many people need a brand new machine right now and they are chugging along with what they have.
Windows 8 and it sucking has very little to do with it, it's more an excuse than anything else.
The fact that you can do most things on a phone (which eveyone needs these days) means a lot of people don't use PCs as much as they used to, so very little reason to get a new machine unless you need it for work.

It's not technology's change that is effecting us, it's how we are using technology is that changing the market. The world has become far more consumer/user-centric than it used to be, and we are buying what we NEED to get our tasks done, rather being forced to buy something we don't, for the most part, actually need.

And this is absolutely great from everyone except Intel, AMD and Microsoft, and manufacturers who are deeply invested into the Desktop/Laptop manufacturing.

1336395 2013-04-11 06:07:00 Most people now are getting a Tablet as well as their Desktop/Laptop so updating their primary computer has less importance

Most tablets will follow the price drop that LCD/Plasma Televisions that have had in the last year or so,personally think Microsoft will get hammered with their Win 8 RT and Win 8 Pro tablets

1336396 2013-04-11 06:29:00 Most people that I know prefer laptop or tablets, most don't even have a PC. Yeah gamers ... video/photo editing do but those are the minority. I'm the only person here with a PC but that's near 4.5yrs old now. There is also a spare computer which the CRT broke so not in used, that one was probably least 6 or 7yrs old, given to us, that was actually fine too for youtube. FB and everything else that was thew at it. When people go out they go with with a messenger type bag right ... the laptop is in there, some have also moved to a Mac laptop.

Yep, I don't think it's Win8 related. People that I know don't want desktop PC's anymore, they're more than happy with a laptop and/or tablet. They're quite happy to sit in the library or at home half a day with a laptop screen. And the battery issue, they'll pack the charger too :D They'll bring their laptop to the lounge, to the rumpus room maybe and back to their bedroom, it's wireless internet, brilliant eh .. not as fast as ethernet but more than enough barely noticeable.

If you look at the extreme side like South Korea or Japan, mobile internet is more popular than Fibre. Yes, Fibre 1000 is same price as Mobile Internet but they still prefer Mobile.
